CALLING ALL PROSPECTIVE MINORITY STUDENTS!

We are hosting our virtual event called Mosaic Experience from October 22nd-23rd. This event is an opportunity for prospective students from underrepresented backgrounds to engage with our multicultural community here at BU. We want to support you as you navigate the college application process, give you a glimpse of student life at BU, and answer any burning questions you may have. Mosaic Experience will feature an incredible group of BU students, organizations, and professional staff who know what it was like to once be in your shoes. Join us for an informative, but exciting weekend by registering for as many of our seven free events as you’d like with the link in our bio!

More celebration for Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month!

Next is Sylvia Rivera 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Simply put, she was an icon. Rivera not only was an inspirational drag queen but one of the biggest activists for the Gay and Transgender Rights movement. Forced to live on her own in the streets from her grandmother's lack of acceptance, her passion for activism had sparked and pushed her to take a stance against hate. Rivera and her friend, Marsha P. Johnson, both came together and ended up creating the “Transgender” program, in which they were able to house and support LGBTQ youth and s*x workers in Manhattan, on top of working with the Gay Libretarion Front, which was founded after the Stonewall Riot in 1969. Given the title, “Mother of the gay rights movement” alongside Johnson, she has been honored as 1 of the 50 activists included in the Stonewall Riots.

Continuing with our Latinx/Hispanic Heritage we will be spotlighting: Roberto Clemente ⚾️

Clemente helped set the path for Hispanic Americans to enter Major League Baseball. His athletic career started in Puerto Rico and at the age of 18, he made it into the professional league. A considerable amount of sweat, blood, and tears had gone into his career during the 1960s as Clemente was the first Latinx American and Caribbean to win a World Series. Unfortunately, he passed away on a trip to go and offer aid to Nicaraguans who had suffered from the 1972 earthquake. He was honored with the Commissioner’s Award, an award given to athletes that demonstrate sportsmanship and community outreach. In 1973 he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, making him the first Latinx American and Caribbean honoree.

September 15th marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month! We want to take some time to acknowledge the large-standing influence many Hispanic/Latinx Americans have had on American history, achievements, and influence. Today, ASDB would love to start by recognizing one of our members, Araceli Guartazaca Vega, and ask how she feels about Hispanic Heritage Month! Later throughout the month, we will also be doing spotlights on different Hispanic and Latinx Americans that have made a big impact on their community and the entire country. Make sure to keep an eye out for these posts! 👀
