The newest members of the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine community—the Doctor of Dental Medicine Class of 2030 and the Doctor of Dental Medicine Advanced Standing Class of 2028—were officially welcomed to the school and the dental field on Friday, July 31, during the 2026 Professional Ceremony.
“Like zirconia being fired into a beautiful dental crown, your transformation into a dental professional is going to take time and heat,” said keynote speaker Ashley Ciapciak DMD 20, instructor of general dentistry. “Every dental student grows at different rates, so as you grow, please be sure not to accidentally compare your beginning to somebody else's middle. Every patient [and] every procedure has something to teach you if you're willing to learn.”

GSDM welcomed students in the DMD Class of 2030 and DMD Advanced Standing Class of 2028 during the 2026 Predoctoral Matriculation Week from Monday, July 27 to Friday, July 31.

Students jumped into a full week of lectures and activities designed to prepare them for a successful dental school journey.

Members of the Doctor of Dental Medicine Class of 2028 and the Doctor of Dental Medicine Advanced Standing Class of 2027 received their white coats during GSDM’s annual White Coat Ceremony, marking the halfway point in their respective programs and the transition to hands-on clinical practice in the school’s Patient Treatment Center.
Dr. Thomas M. Paumier, president-elect of the American Dental Association, delivered the event’s keynote speech. Paumier told students that all dental professionals should follow the guiding principles of lifelong learning, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence throughout their education and careers.
“[Today] is the beginning of your transformation into healers, professionals and leaders and trusted with the health and wellbeing of others,” Paumier said. “The white coat you received today is a symbol of knowledge, compassion, integrity, and responsibility. It is a privilege that you have earned, but also one that must be honored every day as you care for patients.”

Hitesh Vij DMD 20 was named to the American Dental Association (ADA) 10 Under 10 for 2026.

The annual ADA 10 Under 10 Award recognizes ADA members who have demonstrated excellence in science, research, education, philanthropy, leadership, and/or advocacy early in their dental careers. To be eligible, recipients must have graduated from dental school less than 10 years ago.

“The recognition feels like so much more than simply an award,” Vij said. “It truly made me feel accomplished, as it served as a symbol that all my dedication and service, and commitment to the profession had accumulated to something that I have in fact had an impact. It reassured me that I am moving in the right direction and this allows me to take on a greater responsibility to keep serving my community, profession, and patients.”

This week marked another big step for our D3s with their Clinical Orientation! A whole week for them to get familiar with standard rules and procedures in the parts of the school dedicated to treating patients. Next week they begin their clinical journey in earnest. More than 200 GSDM faculty, staff, students, and residents participated in the 2026 Boston University Global Days of Service, an annual university-wide global volunteer event.

Eleven GSDM community members shared why they wanted to donate their time and energy to local causes, as well as their favorite experiences doing so.

“Sometimes we forget how fortunate we are to have the ability and mean to cook for ourselves and access daily meals,” Purnima Sainani DMD 28 said about her experience volunteering during the Pine Street Inn Kitchen prep shift with Student National Dental Association (SNDA). “It felt rewarding to give back in this way, and since we use our hands so much in dentistry, it was especially meaningful to use them in a different capacity to help others.”
