🌟Meet our labs!🌟At BASE Lab, directed by Dr. Nick Wagner, we are working to better understand the systems and processes that promote psychosocial adaptation or contribute to the emergence of psychopathology across development, from infancy to early adolescence. We are interested in examining how early relationships and individual differences in children’s self-regulation contribute to social-emotional development. Our research examines how these influences shape developmental trajectories across domains of adaptive functioning, including social competence, prosocial and empathic behaviors, and school success, and maladaptive functioning, including aggression, callous-unemotional traits, and anxiety.

We are currently recruiting children ages 7-10 and one of their parents for a Zoom-based study. This study seeks to clarify how parents help to guide their children’s development of empathy, emotion recognition and understanding, and interpersonal skills. During the study the child will complete some computerized games, the parent will complete questionnaires, and the family receives a $25 Amazon gift card as compensation for participation.

*Meet our labs!* In the Brain and Early Experiences (BEE) lab, run by Dr. Amanda Tarullo, we are interested in how parents support healthy brain development in the first years of life and how children learn to control their attention and emotions. We study child development by using measures like observing parents and children playing, EEG to assess brain activity patterns, and cortisol levels to assess stress hormones.

Right now we have studies for children from ages 2 to 4! In this study we want to understand how Hispanic families support their children learn the skills that help them succeed in school, like having a strong vocabulary and pay attention while ignoring distractions. This study will take place fully remotely and families will be compensated for their time. To sign up, email [email protected]

The Child Cognition Lab, run by Prof. Deb Kelemen, is interested in children's and adults' conceptions of people, animals, and objects. For example, some of their recent research investigates biology education in early elementary school and how children learn about social norms.

Interested in getting involved? They are currently seeking parents and teachers of children enrolled in 1st or 2nd grade to do a short online study! This study examines the way children and their caregivers learn about public health concepts like disease. Participants will be compensated for their time. To sign up, email [email protected]

The Social Development and Learning Lab, run by Dr. Peter Blake, explores how children think and behave in the social world. In particular, the lab focuses on children's ideas about fairness, cooperation, competition, and ownership.

One of our current studies, The Push-Pull Game, is for children ages 6-11. In this study, children play an online strategic game against different peers, and they win points in the game based on how they and their partners play. Children also answer questions about how they played the game. Afterwards, children receive an e-gift card based on the points they earned!
