In October 2025, SLIS PhD student and Information Literacy Librarian Joyce Aways led a series of online sessions for female undergraduate students in Sudan, supporting continuing education amidst ongoing conflict. The sessions, which focused on the use of open education resources to promote information access and empower learners, provided a beacon of hope in dark times.

“The resilience and perseverance these students have shown have humbled me and touched me deeply. They were not only resilient but so driven and focused on building a better future for themselves and their families. Our career as librarians is not a mere desk job; in some cases it can be a calling that allows us to positively impact people’s lives, especially those in distress or war zones,” Aways says. Her presentation, “Learning Without Borders: Empowering Displaced Students Through Open Educational Resources,” will take place October 20, 2:00pm-3:30pm GST (6:00am - 7:30am EDT) as part of Panel 5 in the Forum for Open Research in the Middle East and North Africa.
