It is with sorrow that the Department of Political Science announces that our dear friend and colleague William D. "Woody" Kay has passed away. Professor Kay was an accomplished scholar, a devoted teacher and mentor, and a kind and thoughtful colleague. His service to the department, the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, and the university over several decades was exemplary. He will be missed. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones.

On Friday, February 3 at 12:45pm, Visiting Lecturer Dennis Kwok will deliver a lecture titled “Corporations and Human Rights: Thoughts on the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Movement - A View From Asia” as a part of the Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy (PHRGE). Professor of Political Science and Public Policy Daniel Aldrich was quoted in this Q&A about Japan's anti military stance:
"I find it very, very unlikely that it would pass a broader referendum because of the broader norm of pacifism in civil society and because of the U.S. presence in Japan...The presence of U.S. troops makes many politicians feel that Japan has no need to invest more resources in its own military."

Germany has committed to rebuilding its military, thereby reversing a post-war commitment to pacifism. Daniel Aldrich, a Northeastern professor of political science and public policy, doubts Japan will do the same.

Professor of Political Science and Public Policy Daniel Aldrich was quoted in this article about the assassination of former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe:
"Abe was still influential in Japanese politics at the time of his death, and was “kind of a kingmaker behind the scenes,” Aldrich says. At the time of the assassination, Abe was promoting other members of his political coalition in advance of an upcoming election."
