March is National Social Work Month, and we’re taking a moment to celebrate the compassion, dedication, and impact of the social work profession. This year feels especially meaningful as we recognize the many ways social workers continue to support individuals, families, and communities with care, advocacy, and leadership.

At the Simmons University School of Social Work, we’re proud to celebrate this month alongside our students, alumni, faculty, and the broader social work community. From advocacy efforts at the Massachusetts State House to classroom conversations that center equity and justice, we’re honoring the work and values that define this profession.

This month and every month, we celebrate social workers - the people who continue to show up, speak up, and make a difference every day.

Please join us in congratulating Professor and Associate Dean for Faculty Development Johnnie Hamilton-Mason on being named a Social Work Pioneer by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Foundation!

This prestigious honor recognizes social workers who have “explored new territories and built outposts for human services on many frontiers,” and Professor Hamilton-Mason is a true example of that legacy. Her groundbreaking contributions include co-founding Simmons’ Academy for Undoing Racism, establishing the Simmons chapter of the National Association of Black Social Workers, and launching the first National Task Force on HIV/AIDS through NABSW. She also broke barriers as the first African American woman to serve as a full professor, director of the School of Social Work, and director of the Ph.D. program at Simmons.

We are incredibly proud to see her leadership, scholarship, and commitment to justice honored at this national level. Congratulations, Professor Hamilton-Mason!

We’re proud to highlight the impactful work of Associate Professor of Practice Emilé Baker, who is empowering individuals and families facing the emotional and trauma-related challenges of allergies and asthma.

Professor Baker supports clients in reclaiming confidence and well-being after life-altering reactions such as anaphylaxis - helping them move from fear to resilience through trauma-informed care. Her specialty fills a critical gap in support services and demonstrates how social work can respond to health-related anxiety and trauma with compassion and expertise.

Thank you, Professor Baker, for bringing this important work into both the classroom and the field - and for showing how social work can promote healing in all aspects of life.
