Masters of the Environment, CU Boulder

Masters of the Environment, CU Boulder The Masters of the Environment (MENV) is a professional graduate degree offered by the University of Colorado Boulder.

The MENV program is a cohort-based, in-residence professional degree program designed for new or early career professionals. The program focuses on applications and problem-solving and has four parts: (1) the core curriculum, (2) a choice of topical specializations that are supported by (3) electives, and (4) a Capstone Project. Through this integrated program, students will develop diverse, cross

-disciplinary perspectives that incorporate policy, science, and values. MENV is grounded in a core curriculum that emphasizes systems thinking and collaborative leadership in coupled human and natural systems. Students become conversant in the language, knowledge, techniques, and methodologies of various disciplines while developing general analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and the adaptability that is indispensable to professional success. Our objective is to provide a foundation of multidisciplinary knowledge and communication and analytical skills that will enable students to be effective environmental leaders. In addition to the foundational training they receive in the core courses, MENV participants students will choose to specialize in Environmental and Natural Resources Policy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Sustainability in the Outdoor Industry, Sustainable Food Systems, Urban Resilience and Sustainability. Throughout the program students will participate in different learning formats that will enable them to acquire new knowledge, skills, and abilities, empowering them to address increasingly complex environmental and related social problems. Learning will occur on campus, in the field, and through experiential and group learning opportunities. MENV embraces a pedagogical approach to foster systems thinking by orienting coursework around real-world problems (rather than disciplines). Supporting this goal, field-based learning opportunities are woven into the program to give students experience with translating conceptual knowledge into effective on-the-ground action. Students will develop and hone their leadership capacities through workshops, peer-to-peer mentoring, professional skills courses, the capstone project, and other β€œreal-world” opportunities through partnerships with outside firms, agencies, and organizations.

Happy Friday MENV Students! You all rocked the first full week of the Fall 2026 Semester.

Although the semester is just beginning, the MENV program is in full swing. In two weeks, on Friday, September 11th, we have the honor of hearing about our 2nd Years findings after months of work with industry partners at the MENV Capstone Poster Session!

Shoutout to all ENVS/MENV students who came to the Welcome Event today outside of SEEC! πŸ’›πŸ–€

We hope you enjoyed some pizza while our student organizations and departments shared ways for you to get involved.

In the MENV program, we believe it is important to build community inside and outside of the classroom. So, keep building those connections!

Recent Grad Spotlight: Monroe Roush

MENV Class of 2025 | RSE | Associate, Climate Aligned Industries @ RMI

"The best networking happens in the classroom." That's Monroe Roush's advice to current MENV students β€” and it's exactly how her own path unfolded.

The technical knowledge from her capstone now shows up directly in her daily work, and the coursework she chose helped sharpen a growing interest in clean energy into a focused path toward industrial decarbonization. But it was faculty mentorship that made the real difference: strong relationships with professors led to standout references and, ultimately, to her current role at RMI.

Her advice to current students: treat every class β€” and every office hours conversation β€” as a networking opportunity. Professors can open doors you don't even know are there.

From the classroom to industrial decarbonization work at RMI, Monroe's story is proof that some of the most valuable relationships are the ones already right in front of you.
Congratulations, Monroe β€” we can't wait to see where this path leads next!

No two capstone projects look alike. 🌍

This year our students worked on everything from rewilding a former golf course 🌱 to decarbonizing concert venues 🎀 to shaping state energy policy ⚑ to protecting centuries-old water rights.

That's the beauty of the MENV Capstone: real problems, real partners, real impact.

Recent Grad Spotlight: David Forest
MENV Class of 2025 | RSE & URS | Energy Systems Modeling Intern @ Vantage Data Centers

David's time in the MENV program sharpened his energy systems and modeling skills while giving him a front-row seat to the intersection of energy, infrastructure, and community impact. Along the way, he learned a lesson that's shaped how he approaches his work: technical solutions only succeed when people are aligned.

His advice for current students: "Come in with an open mind." Explore different subjects, follow your interests, and don't underestimate the value of unexpected projects and conversations.

Congratulations, David β€” we're excited to see where this next chapter takes you!

Recent Grad Spotlight: Erin Spencer
MENV Class of 2025 | EDF Climate Corps Fellow at Environmental Defense Fund
Erin didn't expect her path to lead from federal policy work to hands-on local climate action β€” but that shift opened her eyes to just how much impact happens at the community level. Along the way, she built a professional network that's stuck with her, and discovered an unexpected passion for geothermal energy, which she's now exploring through her fellowship work.
Her advice for current students:
"Be intentional with your networking. Build relationships, not just contacts. Stay connected, follow up regularly, and invest in your professional community."
Erin's story is a reminder that the MENV experience often leads somewhere you didn't plan for β€” and that's exactly the point.
Congratulations, Erin. We're so proud of the work you're doing! πŸŽ‰
