What can a car ride reveal about a community? 🚗
CU Boulder researchers are taking neighborhood research on the road. By riding alongside participants through their own communities, researchers are learning how people experience the places they live and finding new ways to make research more accessible and reflective of lived experiences.
“They found that when placing people inside their own vehicle, the bubble it creates allowed them to engage more deeply both on an environmental level and a personal one. It also matters for accessibility. Interviewing in the car lets researchers work around outside factors like mobility limitations, bad weather and physical barriers.”

Please join us in recognizing Indigenous People's Day. 🦬

There are many opportunities to learn, connect and celebrate Indigenous cultures and histories this Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Explore these three events happening on campus next week!

We hope to CU there ✨

CU Boulder researchers develop a tool that can model phytoplankton biomass extremes in the ocean in ways that conventional satellites often can’t.

Phytoplankton, the tiny, single-celled organisms that live in oceans, are more important than some realize. They are the base of the marine food web and help countless other species in the oceans thrive and survive.

Satellite technology and its continuous advancements have given the world a better understanding of the oceans and the life within them, specifically phytoplankton. But gaps still remain in what satellites can show about the activity of phytoplankton.

Unfortunately, phytoplankton and the oceans they call home are suffering, says Nicole Lovenduski, a University of Colorado Boulder professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences (ATOC) and director of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR). “You can think of (phytoplankton) as the grasses of the terrestrial biosphere,” she says. “They’re the things that build the foundation that everything else eats.”

Norlin Library has been shining bright for 150 years! ✨

Last week, the Norlin Quad came to life with free food, performances, A&S booths and activities celebrating CU’s 150th anniversary. As the sun went down, the celebration continued on the walls of Norlin, with a projection installation.

Through student artwork, historic imagery, video, music and creative storytelling, the installation highlights the people, moments, discoveries and traditions that have shaped the university over the past 150 years while looking boldly toward its future. 💛🦬

Missed the event? You can view the projections throughout October, around dusk from 6–9 p.m.

Join us in congratulating NIST researcher Jun Ye, who was awarded the 2026 Wolf Prize in Physics! He shares the award with Immanuel F. Bloch of the Max Planck Society.

The Wolf Prize celebrates and promotes exceptional achievements in the sciences and the arts worldwide. Ye and Bloch were recognized for “transformative, widely applicable advances in the control of ultracold atomic systems.”

Ye has been a physicist at JILA, a joint institute of NIST and the University of Colorado Boulder, for more than two decades.

The clocks developed by Ye and his colleagues are so precise that they would neither gain nor lose one second in 15 billion years, roughly the age of the universe. Atomic clocks are crucial to GPS and advanced communications, but Ye’s clocks can extend the applications to make precision measurements of gravity, motion, magnetic fields and many other quantities based on tiny changes in the atoms’ “ticking” rate between two energy levels.

His group has set multiple records for accuracy and precision in atomic clocks and has made numerous advancements in optical frequency combs and ultrafast laser-based tools.

We're grateful for our diverse campus and supportive A&S community. 🖤 💛 🦬

The Access, Innovation & Disability Symposium is happening from Sept. 28 through Oct. 1. 🗓️

What you'll learn:
📚 How to improve disability access
🔍 Where to find resources
📣 How to be an advocate for yourself and others..and more!

Whether you have a disability or not, the more you know can help create a stronger, more inclusive CU community.
