To those preparing to become school counselors and those already serving โ€” what kind of impact do you hope to have on the students and communities you work with? ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

Beyond programs, lessons, and interventions, school counseling is about connection and long-term influence.

What does meaningful impact look like to you in this profession?

Representation matters. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

For many students, feeling seen starts with seeing someone they can relate to, trust, and feel safe with.

Sometimes, simply knowing โ€œsomeone like me understands meโ€ can make all the difference.

School counseling is about connection โ€” and representation helps create spaces where students feel heard, valued, and supported.

54% of school counselors say compliance-related tasks reduce their time with students.

The challenge isnโ€™t just the workload โ€” itโ€™s the time taken away from meaningful student support.

Because every hour spent on paperwork is time not spent listening, guiding, and helping students grow.

UJIMA is preparing future school counselors to navigate these challenges while staying focused on what matters most โ€” students. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

โ€œYour legacy is every life you impact.โ€ ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

Being part of UJIMA means more than preparing for a career โ€” itโ€™s about creating meaningful change in the lives of students and communities.

This is your opportunity to grow, serve, and build a legacy that goes beyond the classroom.

Special thanks to former UJIMA team member Hannah Ruth Jones for sharing this message and encouragement. ๐Ÿ’›

Graduating with more than just a degree โ€” but real opportunities to step into the field. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

From eligibility to become a certified school counselor in Maryland to the option of pursuing licensure as a graduate professional counselor, this path opens doors to both school-based and clinical work.

Preparation that leads directly to practice โ€” thatโ€™s the goal.

๐Ÿ‘‡ What path are you most interested in after graduation: school counseling or clinical mental health?

Showing up with purpose, passion, and a commitment to supporting students. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

Every journey in school counseling starts with a shared belief: that students deserve care, understanding, and guidance that helps them thrive.

Grateful for those who are stepping into this space and preparing to make an impact in schools and communities.

Black school counselors play a vital role in supporting studentsโ€™ mental health, academic success, and college readiness โ€” especially for Black students who benefit from representation and culturally responsive care.

Yet across the nation, their numbers are declining.

According to the American School Counselor Association, the percentage of Black school counselors has dropped from about 10% in 2020 to around 8% in 2025.

Beyond the numbers are real experiences โ€” many report feeling unsupported and navigating systemic barriers within Kโ€“12 education.

This highlights a critical need: not only for more counselors, but for stronger support systems for those serving in these roles.

Representation matters. Support matters. Students matter. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›
