This past weekend, our Honors Learning Community (HLC) students got a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the Toledo Zoo, discovering what goes on beyond the public exhibits. When asked about the experience, HLC student Lanie Ramos reported, “Learning about the behind the scenes aspect of the zoo was so interesting. Understanding the careers in different animal groups like aquatics, primates, and more showed how much hard work and passion goes into these kinds of occupations.”

For Lanie, one of the biggest takeaways was the range of career opportunities she discovered. “The variety was very eye opening as to how almost any major could find themselves in this area of work.”

While students gained valuable insight into the zoo's operations, some of what they witnessed had to be censored! Experiences like this give HLC members exclusive access to places and opportunities that others rarely get to see. So, if you're curious about what our photographer couldn't show, becoming an HLC member is the way to see it!

September in Honors: what a month it’s been! From "Light Up the Night" and "Scoops & Scholars" to cleaning up our Adopt-a-Road route and "risky play" in HON 1010, our Honors community has been busy making memories, getting involved and connecting with one another.

At each Honors Learning Community event, one student gets the opportunity to take Lensy, a digital camera and a necessary colleague of the Honors staff, and capture the experience from their own perspective. For this event, first-year HLC member Carter Sherwood captured the evening, and shared:

The Notebook musical at the Fisher Theatre “was a whole bunch of new experiences for me not only as being my first time in Detroit, but also as my first live musical. I was blown away by the amount of emotion being shown from the happiness of young love to the heartbreak of dealing with a family member struggling with Alzheimer's.”

HLC experiences are about evoking emotion and creating memories. For Carter, the event was also an opportunity to strengthen friendships, as he reflected, “I haven't known Sam [a fellow HLC student who attended the event] for very long; he has become one of my best friends. He has helped me get out of my comfort zone and helped me adjust to college life.” Carter's experience is a reminder that HLC events are about more than just where we go; they're also about who we go with.

The Honors Learning Community recently spent an evening at Toledo Pickle Co. in downtown Toledo, enjoying pickleball, food, games, and the lively atmosphere of this local spot. Check out these photos from the event, along with a note from our featured photographer, HLC member Olivia Kleshinski:

"I had the best time visiting the Toledo Pickle Co. in downtown Toledo! While it was not my first time playing pickleball, it was my first time visiting, and the space was absolutely amazing! We had a tutorial on how to play, keep score, and we had so much fun practicing. We also got to enjoy some delicious specialty pizzas, Nashville hot nuggets, and explore a variety of other activities like ping pong, shuffleboard, and arcade games. What really stood out to me was the lively environment and gorgeous murals all around the building. We ended the evening with a beautiful sunset along the river. This was the perfect way to experience another hidden gem right here in Toledo!"

The Honors Learning Community explored campus through two scavenger hunts last week, putting their creativity and problem-solving skills to the test. Between the two rounds, groups worked to answer questions about public artwork and complete different visual prompts. Enjoy these amazing photos from the event taken by HLC member Peter Connolly, who shared:

"The photo-based scavenger hunt was really fun! One group in particular leaned into the Honors student mindset of finding the loophole/workaround. They attempted to complete as many of the 10 prompts in one photo as they could. Others also found some creative ways to make things happen! It was quite enjoyable exploring campus with the rest of the HLC! I particularly enjoyed learning about things on campus that I had no idea existed. It was also fun seeing and talking with faces new and old."
