A great success story from one of our students!

Opening an email from a professor changed the trajectory of Abigail McGraw’s career.

During her sophomore year, McGraw answered an email invitation to attend an information session on campus hosted by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the largest public utility in the nation, regarding internship opportunities for data analytics students. Because she had just started coursework in her major, McGraw didn’t think she had much of a shot at earning one of the coveted internship spots, but attended anyway.

“You’re first,” McGraw heard as TVA personnel announced that interviews were taking place immediately following the information session. McGraw considered any interview experience valuable, so she moved forward with the interview.

“Since that day, it’s been a whirlwind,” said McGraw, a senior who studies business data analytics and economics. “Two weeks later, I started as an external contractor for TVA doing data analytics.” Read more about McGraw at https://bit.ly/2V4ti4W.

As someone who has been trading stock options since age 16, Kyla Scanlon knows a thing or two about return on investment.

Before starting her first semester at WKU, Scanlon took stock of her options in the sciences before settling on business. “I really like math so I thought that engineering might be a really good path for me, but I was just immediately drawn back into economics and finance,” the Louisville senior said.

During her undergraduate career in WKU’s Gordon Ford College of Business, Scanlon has triple majored in Financial Management, Economics and Business Data Analytics. She also has launched her own finance blog, managed a $500,000 portfolio as part of the TVA Investment Challenge, has conducted award-winning research, has served as a leader for Women in Business and other groups, has completed summer internships with businesses in Louisville and is a member of WKU’s Mahurin Honors College.
