Congratulations to Creative Writing BFA Student Isabella Folio on being a 2026 AWP Intro Journals Project Winner!
The AWP Intro Journals Project is a national competition featuring students at all participating member programs from the Association of Writers & Writing Programs, of which BGSU is a longtime member. Her poem "Buried Golden Shovel for Our Father Who Art in Heaven", which she wrote during an independent study in the fall semester, was one of three BGSU poems to be nominated (chosen by BG creative writing faculty), and it ended up being one of nine winners at the national level. It will be published in the literary journal Hayden's Ferry Review.
Buried Golden Shovel for "Our Father Who Art in Heaven" is a golden shovel poem that takes text from the Catholic "Our Father" Prayer. This is a political protest poem inspired by Isabella's own frustration at America's rising violence and subsequent desensitization, as well as how people (Isabella was especially concerned with the current political climate when she wrote this piece) twist religions that stand for peace, charity, and empathy into something destructive, harmful, and self-serving."
