The WKU English Club is proud to announce the return of The Colin Jewell Emerging Writers Prize!

This contest is funded Dr. Joshua Johnson, a WKU English alum, to honor the memory of Colin Jewell, a former student at Western Kentucky University. In addition to Colin’s love for writing, he was an avid reader, and adored collecting books.

The WKU English Club encourages everyone to submit 1-2 pieces of their best work for the chance to win a gift card to Schimmel’s Bookery! Good luck to all!

Hilltoppers, submissions for the 2026 Goldenrod Writing Festival is now open!🌻🌻🌻

Like last year, we are taking both poetry as well as flash fiction (fiction under 750 words) for submission. Please only email ONE piece (along with a cover letter with your information; do NOT put your personal information on your actual piece!) at [email protected] by MARCH 10th at 11:59pm. The actual festival (where finalists will workshop their piece and the top three winners will be announced) is on April 1st.

Our guest judge for this year is Clay Matthews, author of poetry collection “Four-Way Lug Wrench”! Matthews’s poetry collection is all about the journey of life, and all the adventures and characters we come across while navigating it. He will be workshopping with finalists, and he will be the one that will choose the top three winners for the festival.

Good luck everyone, and we can’t wait to read your work soon!🌻🌻🌻

Hello everyone, and welcome back from winter break! We hope everyone has had a chance to relax and settle back into classes this past week.

The WKU English Club is hosting our first meeting for the semester on February 2nd! Not only will we be making our popular Valentine’s Day decorations to hang around Grise Hall, but we will also be discussing a few authors that might judge the 2026 GOLDENROD WRITING FESTIVAL! ✨✨✨

Whether you want to discuss literature, make decorations, help out with Goldenrod or more, the WKU English Club is here! We hope to see you soon!📚📚📚

(Aside from our announcement, the rest of the slides are examples of the Valentine’s Day decorations from last year.^^)
