History graduate students Elizabeth Wilcox, Nicolas Herrud and Jacob Eugster presenting at the Southern Conference of Slavic Studies in Gainesville, Florida!

04/02/2023

Hello all, Please join us for a presentation Department of History & Philosophy faculty Dr. Dzavid Dzanic on:

THE IDEA OF AUTHORITY IN THE QUR’ANIC EXEGISIS OF IBN KATHIR (C. 1300—1373).

April 4, 4-5pm in MUC 308. Refreshments will be provided. All are welcome. Talk sponsored by APSU India Club, Phi Alpha Theta, History Club and Philosophy Club.

This talk examines—from the perspective of intellectual history—the exegetic thought of ʿImād al-Dīn Ismāʿīl ibn Kathīr, a Muslim theologian who lived in Syria between c. 1300 and 1373. The talk will analyze his exegetic vision from two perspectives: first, it will describe Ibn Kathīr’s views on the location of exegetic authority; and, second, it will uncover some points of tension inherent in his exegetic system. The talk will be followed by a discussion with the audience.

Student Spotlight:

My name is Nicholas Herrud, I grew up in Spring Hill Tennesse. After high school, I completed my associate's degree at Columbia State University. During my associate's, I spent a month in Cape Town, South Africa for a study abroad program. In the fall of 2017, I started my B.A. in history with a minor in German after switching from a degree in Biology. In 2018 I became a member of Phi Alpha Theta at APSU and later the president of the organization. For spring 2019, I spent a semester abroad in Klagenfurt, Austria for intensive German language study. In spring 2020 I graduated with my B.A. in history from Austin Peay. Due to the Pandemic, I decided to spend a year abroad in Krakow, Poland learning Polish through a full scholarship provided by the Kosciuszko Foundation. In the fall of 2021, I started my M. A. and Graduate Teaching Assistantship in history at Austin Peay with the intent of applying for my doctorate. In the summer of 2022, I returned to Krakow Poland for more language study and to do thesis research using Polish sources. Because of the war in Ukraine, I witnessed the aftermath of refugees and political uncertainty in Poland which affected my thesis research. My thesis topic revolves around Polish-Ukrianian relations during the Polish-Soviet war in 1920. I am currently on track to graduate and defend my thesis in May.

In February, 2023, I was offered and accepted a generously funded Ph.D. offer from the University of Notre Dame that included a one-year Post-doc appointment. While I am open to teaching my main career path of choice is government work.
