REPORT FROM THE SIDELINE - DR. ANTONIO BALSON: Despite a lack of players (Beaumont ordination, Propaedeutic retreat, donor dinner, deacons’ jobs…), a small group gathered on a beautiful Florida Friday afternoon to inaugurate and celebrate our new field and installations (new goals, bleachers, and team benches) and to play our brothers from Jesus Youth.
After a touching military color guard, the national anthem, and a blessing by Deacon Anthony, our boys started hesitantly, unsure of their ability as a team. That was until forward Iggy found the back of the net on a smart assist from Keegan. With a bit more confidence, Dominic doubled the score on an assist from the selfless Iggy.
The second half saw the brunt of the action. Iggy did not hesitate on his second goal. On a pass from midfielder and playmaker Tommy, Iggy scored a one-touch sideways volley, reminiscent of Zinedine Zidane’s 2002 Champions League-winning goal (see attached video). Thaddeus would score the fourth, making a run on a goal kick by our unexpected but versatile goalie, Austin, who stopped five solid attempts from our opponents. In a generous gesture, Thaddeus dedicated his goal to the coach. A tired defense allowed JY’s lightning-quick Jeff to score their single point. Iggy put the final ribbon on, scoring his second hat trick this year, with another assist from Tommy.
Although the Heat won the game, Amoris Christi gave us a lesson in family and support, as usual, with families and friends showing up, chanting, children playing on the field at halftime, and putting our new bleachers to good use! What a beautiful demonstration of community!
Thanks to all the folks who made this game possible: volunteers, AV and photography, ball boys, kitchen, facilities, Spencer as Assistant Coach, and, of course, to the rector and Fr. Dominic for the new field and all the new hardware. See you next season—I mean, semester.
