Today the Church honors St. Teresa of Calcutta, who found Christ in the poorest and most forgotten and spent her life serving Him there.

She taught that we are not all called to do great things, but that we can do small things with great love. That is much of what these years of formation teach: our men learn to see Christ in the people they will one day serve, and more than 130 of them are already in weekly ministry to the poor, the sick, the imprisoned, and the schools of our region. Pictured here are the seminarians who with Dcn. Greg Quinn, Director of Prison Ministries for the Diocese of Palm Beach who will be working at the Juvenile Detention center here.

Think of how many young peoples lives would be so very different if they had encountered more redily the love of God among their family and friends. This love of Christ and for Christ was the mission of St. Mother Theresa.

St. Teresa of Calcutta, pray for our men, that they may become priests with your love, the Love of Jesus, for the "least of these".

We are challenged to ‘think as God thinks’ — In this week's Sunday Word, Father Alfredo Hernandez says as Catholic Christians, it is essential to have the courage to go against the flow, if we are truly to proclaim Christ to the world. Even within the Church, as we need to continue to respond to abuse of children and vulnerable persons in the past and to work towards greater accountability and justice in the present, being able to “think as God thinks” can be a great force in avoiding going along to get along, as has happened too often in the past. Classes are back in session at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, and our men returned with full hearts.

Summer took them out into the life of the Church. Some served in parish assignments, walking alongside pastors and parishioners. Some spent their days with young people at summer camps. Others traveled on mission, bringing the Gospel to communities far from home.

They came back tired and joyful, which is usually a sign that the summer was well spent.

Now they begin a new year of study, prayer, and formation, preparing to serve as priests for the Church.

Please keep our seminarians in your prayers as this year begins.

Today we were blessed by someone sending us this wonderful article, which we'd like to share with you!

The Catholic Health Association of the United States has a story this week on the chaplaincy practicum that brings our men from the Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine (official) to Ascension St. Vincent's Riverside in Jacksonville. They begin by shadowing the hospital's chaplains, and in time they are visiting patients, families, and staff on their own, and assisting with sacramental ministry throughout the hospital.

Fr. Justino Moreno, who completed the program as a seminarian here and was ordained for St. Augustine, says those two months reached every dimension of his formation: human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral. Jacob Crowell and George Gilbert finished their own shadowing this summer, and George described "falling in love with the ministry" of healthcare chaplaincy.

Please keep our men in your prayers as they learn to carry Christ to the sick.

The future priests shadow hospital chaplains, building skills, knowledge and connections.

This week SVDP has had the pleasure of hosting a group including representatives from the Dicastery for the Promotion of Christian Unity, as well as members of the Faith and Order Commission, of the World Council of Churches which is drafting the materials for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2028. Within this group Catholic and protestant Christians from Cuba, including members of the Seminario Evangelico Teologia and the Catholic churches of Matanzas, Cuba.

Very Rev. Alfredo Hernandez, Rector-President of SVDP said: “It has been a privilege for St Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary to host the international team charged with preparing materials for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2028. Our bilingual seminary has been an appropriate place to welcome a group that was originally scheduled to meet in Cuba. As a Cuban American myself, it has been a particular joy to welcome the members of the Cuban delegation, Catholic and Protestant, all of them from my parents’ home province of Matanzas. When January 2028 comes around, we will have a particular impetus to devote ourselves to praying with the theme: ‘You give them something to eat.’”

A team from Cuba has joined an international editing team to begin drafting the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity materials for 2028. The resources are being prepared jointly with Catholic and Protestant Christians from Cuba, including the staff and students of the Seminario Evangélico de Teologí...

Six years of formation conferences to the men of this house are now published.

Our Rector and President, Fr. Alfredo Hernandez , has published Fiat: Forming Faithful and Fruitful Priests with En Route Books and Media. Released August 9, it gathers the conferences he has given here at SVDP on holiness, preaching, leadership, celibacy, hope, fraternity, and pastoral charity.

The foreword is fittingly written by the now Bishop David Toups of Catholic Diocese of Beaumont, who served as rector-president at SVDP alongside Fr. Alfredo who held various positions, including Academic Dean, under Bishop Toups' tenure.

The book is written for seminarians and for priests already in the field, carrying within much wisdom and reflection for the faithful who support their shepherds' ministry. Endorsements include messages from Bishop Manuel de Jesús Rodríguez of the Diocese of Palm Beach, Bishop Felipe Estévez and others.

Fr. Hernández holds an STL in Dogmatic Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University and a PhD in Pastoral Studies from North-West University, and has served as President-Rector at SVDP since 2020.

Final days of Make-A-Will Month.

A will is where your values are written down. Since 1963 this seminary has formed more than 700 priests for dioceses across the Southeast, and that work continued because people before us planned for it. Today there are 130 or more men in formation here, sent by 13 dioceses.

You do not have to include the seminary to use this tool, and we mean that. Write your will because your family deserves the clarity, and because putting your faith in writing is a good and holy thing to do.
