Montana Wool Lab The Montana Wool Laboratoryโ€™s purpose is to support MSU sheep research, teaching and outreach efforts.

The Montana Wool Laboratory was established by the sheep producers of Montana to serve the sheep industry. In 1945, the Montana Legislature established the Montana Wool Laboratory as part of the Agricultural Experiment Station. Until about 1980, the Montana Wool Laboratory was operated as a separate unit of the Montana Experiment Station. At that time, it was incorporated into the Animal and Range Sciences Department. The purpose of the laboratory (as established by the legislature) "shall be the carrying on of effective scientific and practical research and testing work to develop a complete and accurate knowledge of wools as possible." Primarily, its purpose was to sample and test wool clips and fleeces of Montana growers, and to conduct and carry on scientific and applied research to obtain knowledge of Montana Wool. Although the operation of the laboratory has changed, the guidelines and requirements established in the statute direct the general activities of the laboratory.

The recent 2026 Nanjing Wool Market Conference in China brought together wool growers, buyers, processors, and industry leaders to discuss the future of the global wool trade.

One message stood out:

๐Ÿ“‰ Australian wool production is projected to be 69% below its 1992โ€“93 level.

๐Ÿ“‰ New Zealand wool production has fallen from 142 million kilograms in 2020โ€“21 to 113 million kilograms.

๐Ÿ“‰ South Africa reported a nearly 4% decline in wool production.

Meanwhile, China reported a 4.8% increase in raw wool import volume during the first seven months of 2026, with the average price paid increasing 41.9%.

At ๐—ฅ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€, we believe the tightening global supply picture offers reason for cautious optimism. But limited supply alone does not guarantee stronger prices for every type of wool.

Buyers continue to value consistent quality, proper preparation, low contamination, reliable testing, and dependable supply.

There is also growing interest in traceability and responsibly produced wool, creating opportunities for American growers who can meet these requirements. ๐—ฅ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ has Responsible Wool Standard (๐—ฅ๐—ช๐—ฆ) options for wool growers.

Processors face their own challenges. Higher raw wool prices, narrow processing margins, and uncertainty in consumer demand make purchasing decisions increasingly complex.

Maintaining reliable relationships between producers, brokers, and processors will be essential.

We see opportunities for American wool in a tightening global market, particularly where quality, consistency, and verified sourcing meet customer needs. However, we expect price differences among wool types and periodic market volatility to continue.

The challenge for our industry isnโ€™t simply achieving higher wool prices for one season. Itโ€™s establishing sustainable returns that encourage producers to continue raising sheep, preparing quality wool, and investing in the future.
