Today, the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Lambda Omicron Omega Chapter stood shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of volunteers at the historic Old Memphis Cemetery — not just to clean a cemetery, but to honor a legacy.
Together, we removed trash, weeds, fallen branches, debris, and overgrowth from sacred ground that holds generations of beloved African Americans whose lives, labor, faith, and families helped shape this community. As we worked hand in hand, it was impossible not to reflect on the importance of preserving the stories of those who came before us.
Established in the early 1900s, Old Memphis Cemetery became the final resting place for many African American residents of Palmetto’s historic Memphis community, including farm workers and families connected to the area’s agricultural roots and packing houses. The earliest marked grave dates back to 1907, and the cemetery remains a powerful reminder of resilience, heritage, and community pride.
Today’s cleanup was more than beautification — it was an act of reverence, restoration, and remembrance. We honor those resting there by ensuring this historic treasure remains respected for generations to come. 💗💚
