👏 SO proud of our workshop participants today! 💻🎉

Over the last two weeks, our Computer Basics participants took on a project designed to build real-world digital skills.

Last week, they researched their topics, found and downloaded images, uploaded files to Google Drive, copied and organized information, and saved everything they needed for today.

Today, they turned it all into their own Google Slides presentations AND presented them to the class! 🎤👏

Along the way, they practiced internet research, file management, Google Drive, Google Slides, presentation design, and even a little public speaking.

The goal wasn't just to learn Google Slides. It was to practice using multiple digital skills together to complete a project from start to finish. And they absolutely crushed it. ❤️

Join us next Wednesday at 11AM for our next FREE digital skill building workshop!

🎉 Youth Work Experience Success Story: Meet Jayda!

When Jayda began her summer internship with the Kankakee County Emergency Management Agency (KCEMA) through the Workforce Services Youth Work Experience Program, she hoped to learn more about how the degree she is pursuing in GIS and meteorology could be applied in the real world.

Ten weeks later, she returned to Western Illinois University for her sophomore year with hands-on professional experience and a much clearer vision for her future.

Throughout the summer, Jayda contributed to real emergency preparedness and recovery efforts in Kankakee County. She helped research emergency shelter locations, develop flood action plans for local campgrounds, assist with tornado recovery efforts alongside United Way of Kankakee & Iroquois Counties and 211, review emergency operations plans, and more. She also completed four FEMA certifications and learned firsthand how GIS, meteorology, emergency planning, and community partnerships come together to protect and support residents.

One of the most meaningful parts of her experience was assisting residents impacted by the March 10 tornado.

“The March 10th tornado had drastic impacts on the community, and being able to contact people who were affected and hear their stories will stick with me throughout the rest of my education and career,” Jayda shared.

The experience didn't just build Jayda's résumé, it helped shape her future. Before beginning at KCEMA, she wasn't certain where her studies would ultimately lead. Today, she plans to complete her bachelor's degree in GIS and pursue a master's degree in emergency management.

“I never would have thought that working within an EMA environment could be interesting to me, but after working alongside Becky and Angela, my mind has changed. I strongly believe that emergency management could be a career that I enjoy long-term.”

For Jayda, the Youth Work Experience Program provided more than a summer job. It gave her an opportunity to serve her community, build professional skills and connections, gain confidence, and discover a career path she hadn't previously considered.

Her advice to other young people considering Youth Work Experience? “Do it as soon as you can.”

Good luck in your studies this year, Jayda! 🎓
