READ 'GO AS A RIVER'

CMC’s 2026 Common Reader "Go as a River" engages students, staff, and community members with a series of talks this fall with author Shelley Read.

CMC’s Common Reader program selects one book every year and offers it for free distribution across the dozens of communities CMC serves – followed by a series of discussions, author talks and conversations at CMC campuses.

This year’s common reader, internationally award winning “Go As A River,” invites us into the life of Victoria "Torie" Nash, a young woman growing up on a peach farm in rural Colorado during the mid-20th century. Set against the backdrop of the creation of the Blue Mesa Reservoir and the flooding of the town of Iola, this work of historical fiction explores themes of love, loss, resilience, and finding home in the face of much tumultuous change.

Help us celebrate Colorado’s 150 years of statehood and sesquicentennial birthday with fifth generation Colorado author Shelley Read.

The author, Shelley Read, will tour our district and talk at eight sites from October 19-27.

Mountain Scholars program shifts financial management to CMC Foundation
Program serving first-generation Summit County college students has grown from 8 participants in 2013 to 95 today

Story by Summit Daily News

Mountain Scholars, a program supporting first-generation college students in Summit County, is entering a new phase this fall as the Colorado Mountain College Foundation takes over financial management.

The program, operated through the college’s Breckenridge and Dillon campuses, has grown from eight students when it launched in 2013 to 95 today. Mountain Scholars provides financial assistance, mentorship and ongoing guidance to students whose parents have not earned bachelor’s degrees.

The Summit Foundation has partnered with Colorado Mountain College to support the program since 2018, when it provided a $50,000 match as part of an effort to expand the scholarships. Over the following eight years, the foundation supported fundraising, financial management, mentoring and direct financial assistance for students.

Since the program launched, 67% of participating students have earned a postsecondary degree, according to Colorado Mountain College and the Summit Foundation. The organizations say that completion rate is about 55% higher than the national average for first-generation college students.

Students who follow the Colorado Mountain College pathway also save an average of about $25,000 in tuition.

59 years ago this week, Colorado Mountain College held its very first class.

On October 2, 1967, students showed up for day one at two campuses, Leadville and Spring Valley. This photo shows Spring Valley that same year, buildings still going up while the first students were arriving.

Fast forward to today, and those two campuses have grown into eleven, spread across nine counties, serving about 14,000 students a year.

As we celebrate 59 years of opportunity, growth, and community impact, we're also investing in the future. Scholarships help today's students access the same life-changing education that generations of CMC students have experienced since 1967.

Today is the final day to Saddle Up for CMC's Annual Day of Giving. Make a gift of $19.67 in honor of CMC's founding year, or give any amount that feels right to you.

Krystal 93's "In the Classroom" segment put Dr. Brooke Carson, associate professor of teacher education at CMC's Summit County and Leadville campuses, in the spotlight this month.

Her path to teaching started with a hallway comment from a college professor: "Clearly, you need to be a teacher." Since then, she's taught middle school, led professional education at Keystone Science School, and partnered with NASA on Mars rover curriculum. Now she's the one spotting that same potential in others, like the Einstein Bagels manager she once told, "I think you should be a teacher," who's now her student at CMC, earning her degree through the state's teacher apprenticeship program.
