In practice, players know where the ball is going.
They know what’s coming next.
They aren’t worried about the score.
There are no consequences for mistakes.
But in games?

    •    The ball comes off the bat at different speeds.
    •    Players have to make decisions in seconds.
    •    The pressure is higher.
    •    The outcome matters.
    •    Mistakes feel bigger.

If practice is predictable, players become comfortable.
If practice creates game-like situations, players become prepared.

How To Fix It
Instead of endless lines and isolated drills, start adding:

⚾️Competition
Keep score. Create winners and losers. Give players something to play for.

🥎Time Pressure
Can your infield turn 10 clean ground balls in 90 seconds?

⚾️Decision-Making
Don’t tell players where to throw every rep.
Ask:
“Where’s the play?”
“What’s your responsibility?”
“What’s the situation?”

🥎Situational Training
Runner on second.
One out.
Tie game.
What do we do?
The more situations players see in practice, the calmer they’ll be when they see them in games.

The Bottom Line
Players don’t need more reps.
They need better reps.
The goal isn’t to make practice harder.
The goal is to make practice more realistic.
Because if practice feels easy, games will feel hard.
But when practice feels like the game, players step onto the field confident, prepared, and ready to compete.
That’s the difference between running drills and developing baseball players.

Put your lefties in the infield.

Who cares.

When kids are young and learning the game, stop locking them into one position because of what they throw with. Put them everywhere.

Let them play short. Let them play third. Let them turn double plays. Let them feel the speed of the game from different spots.

The goal at a young age is not to build a perfect lineup. It’s to build better baseball players.

When they understand the whole field, they become smarter, tougher, and more confident.

Develop the player first. Specialize later.
