Morelock Named THS Teacher of the Year!

Congratulations to the 2024 Tennessee High School Teacher of the Year, Mr. Brad Morelock. Mr. Morelock earned his B.S. in History from King University and is currently pursuing his M.A. in Educational Leadership through Austin Peay University.

After graduating from King, Mr. Morelock began his teaching career here at Tennessee High and has taught here for 13 years. Throughout his career, he has taught World History, US History, AP US History, AP Human Geography, and three levels of the Fundamentals of Education classes.

He particularly loves the content of the AP US History classes and the fact that those classes prepare students for college courses. The education courses are important to him because he knows that we need great teachers who love the profession of teaching and that these courses give him the opportunity to instill this in his students.

In his free time, he loves to travel with his family and visit many historical sites throughout the US, giving him experiences he brings back to incorporate into his classroom discussions. When not spending time with his family, you can find him on the golf course every chance he gets.

When asked about what he loves about being a teacher, Mr. Morelock said, “I love teaching, and I hope that my students can tell through my enthusiasm. My goal in any class that I teach is that I hope I can not only prepare students academically but help them prepare for a fulfilling life.”

I’m excited to have gotten a copy of King history alumnus David Painter’s most recent book, on the Iranian Oil Crisis in the early 1950s. David won a Rhodes scholarship after King, went to Oxford, and came back to graduate study at UNC. He has worked for the Department of Energy and the State Department, and taught at Georgetown University for many years. He has now retired to North Carolina, and we’re hoping to have him come speak sometime soon!

Bristol friends: does anybody have 10 shotgun shells that I could use? This is for Howard Moody to play the washboard with, and it would be great if I could get them tomorrow.

This on a day when I have borrowed two violas, a washboard, and a cajon. Makes perfect sense to go after some spent ammunition now!

Here is a labor of love which might keep you company as Advent finishes — a little podcast from the King Institute for Faith and Culture about Bible translator J.B. Phillips. This includes portions of a lecture by Phillips’ grandson, Peter Croft, and a conversation between President Whitaker and Peter. Thanks to Christopher Slaughter, this sounds amazing, from the editing to the theme song. We have another episode available on Spotify, featuring the ever-delightful Katherine Paterson and Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. More to come! Here’s the link: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7p773XI1POgEHFMs9PMNOA?si=7jfD859eQSufZOAuFVdu9g

Listen to this episode from A Place of the Mind on Spotify. J.B. Phillips' inspiring translation of the Bible is, as C.S. Lewis put it, "like looking at a familiar picture after it has been cleaned." Join Alexander Whitaker, president of King University, as he talks with Phillips' grandson Peter Cro...
