Investing in fossil fuel companies whose business plans involve wreaking further havoc on our planet's climate is not only highly questionable economics (what happens to the economy without a livable environment?) but also morally irresponsible. The maximum level of planetary warming we can stand is 2ºC, which will be reached with another 565 gigatons of fossil fuels burned. The problem is that fo
ssil fuel companies have 2795 gigatons in their reserves and plan to burn it all. Therefore, it is urgent that Fordham join hundreds of other colleges and universities in divesting from fossil fuels in order to promote a more environmentally and socially sustainable future for its students and the world at large. It is incredibly hypocritical for Fordham University, an institution that honors its Jesuit values, believes that financial investments in coal matters more than the future health of our planet and the human population. Fordham prides itself in being a leader, and this is our chance to lead. Let us divest in fossil fuels and promote environmental justice!
