Happy Wildlife Wednesday!! This week we are spotlighting the Long Tailed Weasel!

Common Name: Long Tailed Weasel
Scientific Name: Mustela frenata
Fun Fact: These weasels hunt using a technique called the Weasel War Dance. This is a series of frantic, manic twists, turns, and jumps that confuse the prey and allow them to get close enough for the kill.

Happy Friday everyone! Hopefully everyone survived finals week and has a great Christmas Break! This week’s Fisheries Friday spotlight fish is the Coho Salmon.

Common Name: Coho Salmon
Scientific Name: Oncorhynchus kisutch
Fun Fact: Coho Salmon like to inhibit smaller rivers and tributaries along the Pacific Ocean that are too small for larger Pacific Salmon species. They exhibit a silvery color when in marine environments, but when they return to freshwater to spawn, adults are dark with reddish-maroon coloring.

It’s WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY! Today we are spotlighting the famous 13-lined ground squirrel!

Common Name: 13-lined Ground Squirrel
Scientific Name: Spermophilus tridecemlineatus
Fun Fact: Thirteen-lined ground squirrels can survive for up to 6 months in hibernation without food or water. They communicate with others though alarm calls and other noises.

It’s WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY!! Todays ‘Wildlife Wednesday’ spotlight animal is the Mourning Dove.

Common Name: Mourning Dove
Scientific Name: Zenaida macroura
Fun Fact: Mourning doves are unable to sweat, so in order to stay cool during hot weather, they will pant like a dog. This requires them to drink a large amount of water due to the high rate of moisture loss to evaporation.

!!!71st Annual Buffalo Banquet!!!
The Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation Club will be hosting the 71st Annual Buffalo Banquet on October 27, 2023. This will be held at the Midway Camp in Brookings.
- doors will open at 6:00pm
- ticket prices are as follows: students $15 & adults $25
- we will only be selling 100 tickets!!! 🎟️
