College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences

Welcome to the College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences at South Dakota State University! One of eight colleges that make up SDSU, our college has an integral role in fulfilling the land grant mission of the university. In addition to eight academic departments, the college is home to both SDSU Extension and the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment

Station. The West River Ag Center is a satellite of the college, and serves as center for teaching, research, extension, and outreach activities in the western part of the state. The college is the largest at SDSU in terms of student enrollment, faculty and staff, and building space. Academics

Students choose our college because we offer a premier agricultural curriculum dispensed by faculty that are committed to student success. The practical nature of our programs attracts students from across the United States. Prospective students have over 20 majors and specializations to pick from. Enrollment is at an all-time high and tuition rates remain competitive. The post-graduation job outlook is very promising, as opportunities grow to meet the demands of a hungry world. Research

Researchers in the College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences are internationally renowned, providing cutting edge research to fuel economic opportunity. Priority areas include animal health and nutrition, biotechnology, energy independence, sustainability, and stewardship. Most of the research done in the college is within the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, which also includes investigators from the Colleges of Arts & Sciences, Education & Human Sciences, and Engineering. Most of our graduate students are involved in research programs, and opportunities for undergraduate research are continually growing. Extension

The five capstone areas of SDSU Extension are Competitive Crop Systems, Competitive Livestock Systems, 4-H Youth & Community Development, Food & Family, and Rural & Urban Initiatives. SDSU Extension field specialists are focused in eight region centers and three Federally Recognized Tribal Extension Program offices, while 4-H Youth Program advisors work from county centered offices. These are supported by state specialists and program directors based out of Brookings and the West River Ag Center in Rapid City. South Dakota’s virtual Extension office, iGrow, brings SDSU Extension programs beyond the limitations of time and space.

SDSU was on Capitol Hill yesterday for with Association of Public and Land-grant Universities! We showcased our signature cookies n’ cream ice cream and engaging with lawmakers about how university ag research, extension and workforce development drive innovation that supports dairy producers and the future of agriculture.

Fun fact: SDSU invented cookies ’n cream back in 1979! Yep, the OG creators of the iconic flavor. Shirley Seas and dairy science students Joe Leedom and Joe Van Treeck mixed crushed sandwich cookies into vanilla ice cream and history was made.

Today, nearly 100 flavors have rotated through the SDSU Dairy Bar, with 30 delicious picks scooped daily. Alongside the classics, you’ll find SDSU originals like Barry Berry, Hobo Crunch and Campanile Cordial.

Swing by the Dairy Bar for a scoop, a pint or even a 3‑gallon tub to fuel your whole summer.

After completing their associate degree, graduates can seamlessly continue into SDSU’s four year degrees in dairy manufacturing or dairy production.

“I am exciting to offer this new program,” said Londa Nwadike, David A. Thompson Endowed Department Head of Dairy and Food Science. “It will allow more students the opportunity to obtain a degree and help mee the needs to dairy and food industry by providing additional qualified graduates.”

A legacy rooted in innovation, now shaping the future of livestock technology. 🌾🐮
Thanks to a transformational gift of farmland from Dick and Jeune Nicolai, SDSU is establishing the Richard and Jeune Nicolai Endowed Chair in Precision Livestock Systems.

Dick’s lifelong passion for agricultural innovation sparked his vision to close the gap in precision livestock technology education. This gift will support a new faculty position, expand research and strengthen SDSU’s precision agriculture education for years to come.

G’day, mates! We’re heading Down Under! 🌏🐨
Dive into an Aussie adventure as one of our study abroad classes explores agriculture, wildlife and life on the other side of the world. Time zones may be wild (it’s already tomorrow there!), but you can follow along today on our stories as Dustin Kolb shows you what the class has been up to across Australia’s outback and beyond.

Meet the host:
Dustin Kolb is a senior from Bison, SD studying animal science and agricultural science. On campus, he is a CAFES ambassador, admission ambassador and is a member of Collegiate Cattlemen’s. Dustin says he has been looking forward to seeing how animal production, specifically beef production, differs in Australia.
