Just a little bit of weekend rendering work to finish out a few projects. This house is literally out in the middle of the prairie in central SD, where one of the toughest decisions ended up being how big the tree spade needed to be to have shade for the yard in less than 10 years. When clients know exactly what they want and can be decisive about design decisions, the process can move forward so smoothly! 😉

Working on the design of a super sweet cottage-inspired backyard flower shed, and decided to lean FULLY into the flower shed interior aesthetic this weekend! 💛💛💛 Dreaming of spring and getting our hands in the dirt!

We’ve been teaching ourselves some new AI tools lately to help streamline and improve our conceptual rendering processes, and it’s been fun to augment our traditional modeling with AI enhancements that can just go way faster and help us be more iterative. In this case, we’ve been helping some friends with ideas for their home renovation, and were able to change house colors, landscaping ideas, front walk paver styles, and the scale/configuration of the front steps WAY FASTER with some AI plugins than if we had re-modeled and re-rendered each option in our traditional process. For concept-phase renderings, it’s fantastic. When we get to more photo-realistic final renders, though, we still like to ensure doors only have one set of door hardware, and people don’t have extra hands. 😂 swipe to see the REAL “before” image. We’re so excited for Shirelle and the Seven Songbirds Boutique team! 💛 It’s been an honor and a joy to help them design a historically-sensitive rebuild of their store in Downtown Brookings after the fire. Getting closer every day! 💛💛💛

It has been so fun to work with the team at the Pheasant Restaurant and Lounge to imagine what the next 20+ years of service could look like, give the building some TLC, and celebrate their building’s history while preparing for the future! Some new flashing, proper waterproofing, and fresh siding panels are well underway! A few more days and some finishing touches and phase 1 of this transformation wi be complete! We think you’re going to love it! 😉

Behind the Build: Honoring History, Designing for Today ✨

After a heartbreaking fire destroyed the original downtown structure and the adjacent building last December, Seven Songbirds is rising again. Construction is underway, and soon a "new" building will stand in the same location, carrying forward the history of the one that was lost.

As the first new building in downtown Brookings in decades, reconnecting the façade to the surrounding historic context was a priority for both the owner and the community. The design features new brickwork that honors the character of the original structure while introducing a modern storefront intended to activate the street and welcome the community inside.

Our approach intentionally balances historic character with contemporary needs—creating a building that respects its story while looking ahead to the future.

We're extremely grateful for all of the great people we work with this Thanksgiving! Our offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday to spend quality time with family and friends. Wishing you all a joyful and warm Thanksgiving celebration!

With these last few days of "second summer" coming to a close and the temps taking a turn toward finally FEELING like fall, it's time to harvest everything and put our office's alley garden to bed! Check out the zinnias our team grew this year! The polinators have LOVED them, and we've loved having fresh colorful bouquets every week this past month!

It's Q4 and we're ready for more! With the end of the year quickly approaching, we’re tying off loose ends on current projects and reflecting on the progress we’ve made. From design milestones to construction completions, it’s been a year of growth and collaboration.

We’re also revisiting the goals we set for 2025 — keeping ourselves aligned, inspired, and ready to take on what’s ahead. Here’s to finishing strong before stepping into the new year with purpose.
