Last year, a Mechanical Engineering Senior Design group from SDSU, sponsored by the NASA XHab program, created and studied a new 3d printable material using ABS plastic and basalt fibers. The goal of their project was to develop a material that could be used to build habitats for astronauts on the surface of Mars. This material is stronger than regular ABS plastic, stiffer than ABS plastic, helps protect astronauts from space radiation, and best of all, the basalt fibers that provide strength and radiation shielding can be sourced from the surface of Mars, making this material much less expensive than any material we would ship from earth. Their work was recently published in the Journal of Composites Science (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/335635981_Development_and_Mechanical_Properties_of_Basalt_Fiber-Reinforced_Acrylonitrile_Butadiene_Styrene_for_In-Space_Manufacturing_Applications).

We’re only two days away from , our biggest single-day fundraising campaign for the year. Gifts made to the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering Excellence Fund will be used to help out already successful student teams (like the Human-Powered Vehicle, Mars 3D, SAE Baja and Formula SAE teams) as they make us all proud to be Jackrabbit Engineers. https://spsr.me/9GcN

Our sponsor of the week is KC engineering. Thank you for supporting our project.

In the picture below we are working on part of our material handling system. Once the material handling system is running will be able to start full-scale prints.

Thank you to our sponsor of the week Mid States Electric. Without their support, we would not be competing in this exciting competition. We've been working hard getting the printer ready for competition. In the picture below is a sample that has been sent out to complete a freeze-thaw test. This will allow us to see how our material performs in harsh conditions.

What do Mechanical Engineering students do on Friday night of Hobo Week? They work on their 3d printer for the NASA 3D Printed Habitat Challenge. Check out these hard working students shoveling 8,000 lbs of #57 gravel for the base of the printer.
