BU Materials Science and Engineering www.bu.edu/mse: MSE offers the MS, MEng, & PhD in materials science & engineering, as well as an und

MSE was established on July 1, 2008 to leverage the expertise of faculty conducting research in materials in the College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, and the Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Our faculty are driving innovations in biomaterials, electronic and photonic materials, materials for energy and environment, and nanomaterials applications. The strong link between material

s science, emerging research and products in the marketplace means ample job opportunities and a positive career outlook for materials scientists and engineers with advanced academic training. Applications for new materials, and modifications of existing ones, are expected to keep the demand for trained, graduate-level materials scientists and engineers growing in large companies, start-ups and academia.

What a great day of hands-on learning!
During ASM Materials Experience at Boston University, high school students explored the world of Materials Science & Engineering through interactive modules on shape memory alloys, cryogenic phenomena, corrosion and batteries, microscopy, polymers, and 3D printing. Thank you to the faculty, graduate students, volunteers, and organizers who helped inspire the next generation of engineers and introduce students to exciting STEM careers.

🔗 in bio | David Bishop was awarded the 2026 Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Physics Prize for groundbreaking experiments that uncovered the role of vortices in the superfluid phase transition in helium films and observed anionic braiding statistics of quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect, thus establishing the significance of topological excitations in two-dimensions.
