Join Downtown Brooklyn Partnership (DBP) and NYU Tandon School of Engineering, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and NYCEDC for the Make It in Brooklyn Play Jam & Showcase. This evening spotlights the work of current Game Design Future Lab (GDFL) cohort members, giving attendees a rare opportunity to see the NYCEDC-sponsored incubator program progress at the six months mark. The event will also feature projects from the NYU Game Center Incubator, showcasing Brooklyn’s most innovative emerging game creators.

Want to make a tabletop game but don’t know where to start? Now’s your chance!

A few of our expert faculty members are leading a FREE interactive games workshop at Lincoln Center this Sunday, April 19th at 1pm, teaching you all about the art and principles of game design.

This is a FREE, all-ages workshop where you’ll be taught the fundamentals needed to craft your very own tabletop game. No prior experience required- come through and we’ll teach you the rest! 

Sunday, April 19 at 1pm at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center. This event is first-come, first served. Just show up!

Join us for the annual NYU Game Center Spring Showcase! Students will be showing playable demos of their work made over the course of this past year. You are encouraged to meet and chat with students about their game making process at this huge end of year celebration!

Who is showing?
The Showcase will feature projects from all graduating Capstone and Thesis students, as well as a selection of digital and non-digital games made in a range of design, studio, and development courses at the NYU Game Center.

What can I expect to see?
At least 50 games will be present at this showcase! A map will be provided to you in the form of a program booklet.

Non-alcoholic refreshments will be provided. BYOB 21+ with ID.

Video game journalism is more effective, ambitious, and diverse than ever before. So why do both readers and journalists alike often predict the form’s impending demise? In this talk, Chris Plante, co-founder of Polygon and current host of The Besties and Post Games, will provide a guided tour through 50 years of games media. Guests will also have an opportunity to ask questions about how games media (and media at large) actually works.

Chris Plante is the host of Post Games. He also co-hosts The Besties, one of the longest-running and most beloved video game review podcasts. He previously co-founded Polygon. His work has appeared in The Verge, The Guardian, Vulture, and The New York Times.

The Monument Valley series is known for the way it elegantly intertwines visual art and game design. In this talk, Lili Ibrahim, Art Director on Monument Valley 3, will peel back the curtain on the creative and production processes behind the hit game. How can puzzle designers and visual artists collaborate seamlessly? How do you structure level design collaboration so that ideas can be sparked by both design and art experimentation? Lili’s lecture will peek behind the scenes to reveal step-by-step deconstruction of puzzle levels, explaining team collaboration and dynamics, with an emphasis on the role that visual design can play. Join us for an in-person discussion of workers' rights in the gaming industry hosted by the Independent Labor Club of New York City

Games and play are an essential part of modern culture. From the latest videogames on phones and computers to friendly boardgames around the kitchen table, they’re one of the largest and most mass market forms of art. But few think about the work that goes into making them or the people who do it. Making games for a living can be a dream job for a generation raised on consoles and home computers. But the working conditions of that dream have always been fraught, and in recent years have appreciably worsened across the industry. Studio closures and layoffs are increasingly common, but there’s also been a new wave of organizing efforts and successful unionization drives.

In light of these developments, the Independent Labor Club has invited a panel of games industry professionals involved in labor organizing to discuss the following questions:

What are your labor conditions like? What challenges do you face?
How is the quality of the work you make? How could it be improved?
In a society organized on other principles, what sort of games might you look to design? How might they look different than games do today?

The panel will last from 6:30-8:00pm, followed by a town hall.

It's GDC Day 3, and we’ve got a packed day ahead of us! In addition to all of the great conference sessions, today is when the show floor opens in the Festival Hall!

Make sure to stop by and support student and Incubator games being demoed in the South Hall, booth 1349 from 10:50am to 3:00pm. Several groups will also be displaying their games all day at WERQWISE. Be sure to check them out as well, and while you're there, take advantage of the New York Business Lounge which has plenty of extra seating so you can take a break and play some games!
