Meet the NYU Tandon 2026 Faculty Award Winners

Institute Professor Claudio Silva and Dean Emeritus Katepalli Sreenivasan have been awarded the the Excellence in Research Award — which is given annually to senior faculty in recognition of significant and sustained research accomplishments.

This year's Junior Faculty Research Award goes to Assistant Professor Eugene Vinitsky.

Industry Associate Professor Richard Stein has been awarded the Distinguished Teacher Award.

Professor Nikhil Gupta has been awarded the Jacobs Excellence in Education Innovation Award.

Industry Associate Professor Shizhu Liu has been awarded the Inclusive Excellence Award for Faculty.

Industry Assistant Professor Alon Hillel-Tuch has been award the Dean's Award for Excellence in Online Education.

A study from NYU Tandon School of Engineering challenges the popular belief that data centers are a rural phenomenon.

"There is a prevailing narrative of these data centers being somewhere in the middle of nowhere, in rural areas, being a positive force for employment, and being the future of rural communities," said lead researcher, NYU Tandon Institute Professor Maurizio Porfiri, who is the Director of Tandon’s Center for Urban Science + Progress and of the NYU Urban Institute. "We dramatically challenged this view."

Assistant Professor Juanita Hidalgo and post-doctoral researcher Sara Hamilton have authored a paper which explores how solar panels are recycled, and how designing green energy sources means thinking ahead to the end of the technology’s life.

"Solar panels are the clean energy infrastructure of the future," says Juanita Hidalgo, Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NYU Tandon. "But to make solar truly sustainable, we also need to think about what happens after these technologies reach the end of their lifetime."

NYU Tandon's C2SMART researchers build an AI framework that predicts ambulance speeds through city traffic. This AI framework was created as part of a multi-year project with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and Tandon's C2SMART transportation center.

Industry Professor Chris Clark took a team of Tandon researchers to Malta to uncover hidden shipwreck artifacts with the development of autonomous underwater robots that can explore places that are too risky for divers. This research was done in collaboration with Timmy Gambin from the University of Malta as well as Heritage Malta, the national agency responsible for protecting and preserving the country's cultural and natural heritage.

Meet Ph.D. Candidate Andrew B. Park, who is working in Assistant Professor Mohamad Awada’s lab. Park is building an AI tool that can look at a photo of a ladder and determine whether it's actually safe. Park is also the recipient of the NYU Urban Doctoral Fellowship.

Meet Ph.D. Candidate Omid Emamjomehzadeh, who is working in Assistant Professor Omar Wani's lab on building a flood-risk framework that gives New York a new tool to protect its roads. Emamjomehzadeh is the recipient of the NYU Urban Doctoral Fellowship, which recognizes doctoral students across NYU whose research advances understanding of urban challenges.

The Linux Foundation's board chair singles out Professor Justin Cappos and NYU Tandon's Secure Systems Lab as a premier example of the academic-to-open-source pipeline, noting that Cappos's five Linux Foundation projects — TUF, in-toto, Uptane, SBOMit, and gittuf — have become production-scale security infrastructure used by Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.

Professor Justin Cappos's conversation with OpenBao developers at Open Source Summit North America inspired a proposed redesign of the secret-sharing protocol that secures vault encryption, replacing complex randomly generated key shares with a password-based scheme that would be easier to store and use without sacrificing cryptographic security.
