Read a student's piece about the labyrinth at LIU Post!
LIU Post Labyrinth, Rakwan Hedgemond, Sophomore Journalism Major
The feeling of relaxation consumes your body as you enter the labyrinth at LIU Post, and you let the wind take you to places you have been before. Seats waiting for me with open arms, inviting me to stay a while. The breeze talks to me, telling me that everything is going to be okay, as long as I allow nature to take care of me.
It’s a place for great self meditation, or even for group meditation. No matter what the temperature is outside, I always find my way to the labyrinth when I am feeling down or stressed out. I sit and let nature work its beautiful wonders on my senses.
Eyes closed, I imagine everything that is happening around me. I smell the scent of nature, trees blowing and grass fluttering. I hear the trees leaves rattling as the wind embraces them with a nice blow.
As the birds join me in my meditation and relaxation, they sing to me in a language I don't understand. But regardless, it is music to my ears. Squirrels running around looking for food to eat, knowing that I will bring a few acorns for them. There is so much to enjoy at the labyrinth.
Looking around the labyrinth, I feel like I am in paradise. New leaves on the trees and no leaves on the tree. Some are already prepared for spring weather, while some trees haven't let go of winter just yet. You get the perfect view in between the spring trees to watch the sun start to do its job on the other side of the earth. Flowers already growing, screaming “let spring begin!”
One thing that I remember the most from the labyrinth is inviting my friends to join me and just relax. We sat there and let nature start the conversation. And before I knew it, we were talking about the future; who do we think will become president and how we want to raise our children. It was a conversation for the ages, a conversation that will never be forgotten. And it all started with nature.
