The South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute (STDOI) was founded in October 2014 with Dr. Sarah Williams-Blangero as its Founding Director. It is the flagship research component for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine. The STDOI is spread across three locations including the UTRGV Brownsville campus, the UTRGV Edinburg campus, and a UTRGV STDOI Annex in San Anton

io. The mission of the STDOI is to advance the health of South Texas and the world through cutting edge research on diabetes, obesity, and related disorders. Our team has significant expertise in diabetes, obesity, heart disease, brain-related diseases, eye diseases, bone-related diseases, and infectious disease; and technical experts in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, computational biology, bioinformatics, human genomics, molecular genetics, and stem cell biology.
