Requirements to Become a VA Social Worker

• Education: Master of Social Work (MSW) or MSSW degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
• Licensure: Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
• Framework: The VA evaluates candidates using the KSA (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities) framework and performance-based interviews.

A Veterinary Social Worker (VSW) is a licensed social worker who focuses on the emotional, psychological, and social issues that arise from the relationship between people and animals. Rather than providing medical treatment to animals, they support the people involved in animal care, including:

Pet owners coping with a pet's illness, injury, or death
Veterinarians and veterinary staff experiencing compassion fatigue, burnout, or grief
Families making difficult end-of-life decisions for their pets
Animal shelter workers and rescue organizations dealing with emotional stress and trauma
Individuals affected by animal abuse or neglect

Law Enforcement Social Worker:
• Crisis Intervention: Accompanying officers to high-stress calls involving domestic violence, substance abuse, psychiatric emergencies, or trauma.
• De-escalation: Utilizing specialized therapeutic training to negotiate with distraught individuals and calm volatile scenes.
• Case Management & Referrals: Assessing an individual's long-term needs and connecting them to housing, substance abuse rehabilitation, or outpatient psychiatric care.
• Victim Support: Providing immediate counseling, legal resource navigation, and safety planning for victims of violent crime.
• Officer Wellness: Designing and conducting stress-management and mental health training specifically for police officers and their families.
