Today we feature Professor Megan Mason, Director of Chamber Music! Since joining the faculty in 2018, she’s had an amazing impact on our students and the instrumental program.

“I love teaching collaboration and a new way of working together through Chamber Music...I believe music is a great lens through which we can view our world and each other. Southern Virginia University provides the perfect laboratory for making great music together”

Happy International Women’s Day! We are inspired by the amazing women who teach within the Performing Arts Department and their profound influence at SVU.

“Dr. Romriell has inspired me to work my hardest. She is so patient and understanding and really strives to make us feel comfortable, safe, and capable. She inspires me to try harder, and inspires me to become a better human.” -Gracious Pack, sophomore

“Prof. Cluff is a wonderfully compassionate teacher. She is always so aware of her students and their needs, and really works hard to make her classes and all productions a welcome creative space. I have been blessed so many times by a word or action, and I am grateful that I’ve been able to work with her.” -Natalie Kelly, senior

“Professor Dobbins encourages you to constantly grow and push yourself...She’s a constant example that there’s always more room to grow and that you should strive to improve as a musician daily, even if you’re not actively studying music or if you’re playing pieces that don’t seem like a challenge at first glance. She encourages us to make even the simplest pieces as musical as we can.” -Carolyn Leavitt, Junior

“Prof. Mason re-centers me on why we play music. It’s so easy to get caught up in just getting the right notes and rhythms, but Professor Mason often reminds me to look beyond that in order to connect to what the music really means to me and to my audience.” -Sarah Bench, Senior

In today’s rehearsal, Chamber Singers conductor Dr. Neilsen said, “The only thing you should expect from yourself is the best that you can offer in that moment. Expecting more all the time isn’t fair for yourself or those around you and it’s no way to live! Let’s recalibrate our expectation of ourselves to give what we are able in that moment and feel fulfilled by that effort rather than never trying because of this fraudulent feeling that we aren’t enough. This way failure isn’t an option as we center our goals of integrity and excellence into our process as humans and an ensemble”

Enjoy this clip of the Chamber Singers rehearsing the first movement of Felix Mendelssohn’s setting of Psalm 98, “Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied.”

We are excited to welcome celebrated band director Randall Beach as our new marching band director beginning summer 2021. With his experience directing award-winning bands, Beach will build upon the foundation of the University’s marching band after a year-long pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I have a lot of passion about marching band, which I will bring with me to Southern Virginia University...In all of the years that I've [taught], I've tried to get better and better at motivating and inspiring young people to reach their full potential... One of the things I say every year to my students is there's nothing more inspirational, more motivating, more enriching, than pushing yourself to reach the highest levels of excellence possible. When you do that, it will change your life.”

Beach has 40 years of experience as a director of bands throughout Utah, most notably at Brigham Young University, Green Canyon High School, and Sky View High School.

Additionally, Beach has performed with the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, Utah Chamber Orchestra, and Utah Choral Society. He has also recorded with the LA East Recording Studios for the ABC Wide World of Sports and various motion pictures and television series.

The Performing Arts division offers a variety of opportunities for personal education, one of which is our Conducting Internship!
Junior Chris Vasquez said about his experience: “I just feel grateful that I get to apply my education in a very real way every day. Very few schools have an internship like this and I've never seen one where undergraduates get to conduct all the choirs on a daily basis like we do. I learned how it feels to take a musical journey with a group of singers from start to finish. It wasn't mock directing in a conducting class, it was working with real humans and learning to make art with them from a whole new perspective.”
