Everyone say hi to Marcelino 😄👋

He is a Senior from Dajabón, Dominican Republic. He is majoring in Business Management and Leadership. He is a member of the baseball team, serves as a weightlifting captain, and is the Secretary of SAAC.

1. Why did you choose to attend SVU?

SVU is a place for student-athletes who have something to prove, who are chasing a dream, and who want to become better versions of themselves. I come from a country where people are hungry for opportunities to grow and build a better life, so being surrounded by others with that same drive has been one of the greatest blessings for me.

2. If you could speak to the donors who made your scholarships possible, what would you say?

My whole SVU experience is built around the generosity of people who have seen potential in me and what I can become. I get emotional, it is a blessing to be around people who believe in you and are willing to support you to reach your potential.

3. What have you loved about your experience at SVU?

I’ve loved the friendships I’ve built across campus and the many lessons I’ve learned that have helped me grow and become a better disciple of Jesus Christ.

4. What would you say to prospective students who think they don’t qualify for scholarships?

You have to believe in yourself. If you don’t, who else will? If you believe that God is real, and that good things happen to good people then you should be worthy of assistance to come to a university that will lift you up academically and faithfully.

5. What advice would you give to incoming freshmen?

“It is better to be discipled than being smart.” Stay committed, keep things simple, and trust the Lord—everything else will fall into place.

From serving as CEO of Madison Square Garden to owning championship teams and launching major investment firms, he has helped shape the world of sports and media. He now serves as Managing Partner of Checketts Partners Investment Management, investing in the future of sports, media, and entertainment.
