We've seen a surge this year in "phishing" attempts by email and text, in some cases from individual Buffalo State accounts which had become compromised. Phishing is a kind of fraud which tries to steal sensitive info like usernames/passwords by disguising itself as a trustworthy source. These messages usually claim to be from department chairs, Buffalo State or the IT Help Desk itself, or companies like Apple/Microsoft.
Watch out for some of the WARNING SIGNS outlined below:
>>> "Too-good-to-be-true" job listings or surveys offering money
>>> Web forms asking for your passwords or personal info
>>> Unexpected Multi-Factor Verification requests
>>> Unprompted mystery files shared by unfamiliar senders
>>> “Are you free” messages asking for odd favors or contact info
When in doubt, just ignore/delete the message or forward it to the IT Help Desk at [email protected] for examination.
