Does your team have the right lineup of players to make a playoff run this season?

New research suggests that team chemistry is more than a feeling: it can be measured with data. ⬇️

“Many ‘superteams’ stacked with star players have failed to meet expectations, while less-celebrated rosters have captured championships,” says study co-author Kate Bezrukova. “Strong team chemistry can develop when a lineup has both differences among players as well as smaller groups of players who have things in common that can provide support.”

The researchers found that the right combination of similarities and differences can help a group of players perform better than individual talent alone would predict and the composition of a team matters most early in the season when the pressure is lower, players are still learning to work together and supportive subgroups can help foster resilience.

And, the findings could offer lessons beyond sports, demonstrating the importance of team formation, onboarding and early relationship-building.

As generative AI becomes more autonomous and deeply integrated into society, researchers need to evaluate who benefits, who may be harmed and how systems can be optimized for social good.

That's according to research from the latest issue of the INFORMS Journal on Computing, co-edited by Ram Ramesh, an area editor of the journal and professor of management science and systems in the UB School of Management.

Top artificial intelligence officials from the Republic of Azerbaijan recently visited UB and the School of Management to discuss educational partnerships and economic development opportunities.

Over the course of the day, the team met with UB faculty and administrators to learn about UB’s longstanding leadership in AI research and education, including the university’s wide-ranging efforts to harness AI for the public good.

New research finds that LinkedIn employment data may help investors spot financial reporting problems before they surface. ⬇️

“With fewer accountants entering the profession, losing qualified staff can put added pressure on employees and processes responsible for financial reporting,” says study co-author Joshua Khavis.

The researchers found that accounting-employee churning (accounting employees being replaced) predicted subsequent financial reporting problems. The connection was strongest at companies with more complex accounting operations and in labor markets where qualified accountants are harder to recruit and retain.

And, the study offers investors and regulators a way to spot potential reporting issues before they become widely known: publicly available employment data.

This summer, students in the Social Impact Fellows program helped advance the missions of nonprofit partners in the region, including Habitat for Humanity Buffalo, the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor, Buffalo Center for the Arts and Technology, CCNY Inc. and the Collaborative Center for Social Innovation.

Since 2017, more than 200 UB students from the School of Management, School of Social Work, College of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Public Health and Health Professions have taken part in the program at more than 70 different internships in the Buffalo area.
