Emeritus Professor of Nutrition and Food Sciences Dr. Jean Harvey has been posthumously awarded the 2026 Sinclair Cup.

In October of 2025, the UVM community felt a deep loss for the highly accomplished professor, mentor, and community member. Her award of the Sinclair Cup reflects her dedication and impact during her 34 years at UVM.

UVM CALS and Extension present her with the award as her career and dedication reflect that of Dr. Sinclair’s. Dr. Jean Harvey’s Memorial Service will be held tomorrow, May 23, from 2-4 PM at the Vermont National Country Club. Her husband invites the UVM community to attend and share about the impact she had during her years of dedication.

CALS Assistant Professor Joe Ament and UVM students are leading the housing conversation in Burlington in a recent study.

Recently published in Seven Days VT, this study analyzes how the key to solving the housing crisis in Burlington isn’t just about building more housing. The team dug into data on the cities’ housing shortage, and their finding highlighted the importance of market dynamics, demand, and development patterns, all of which contribute to the issue.

Yesterday, UVM continued a nearly-century-old tradition, its Vermont Sugar on Snow Party 🍁🎉🍁

This spring celebration dates to 1937, when it was called the "Dean Hills Maple Sugar Party." Back then, students had to secure tickets so they could be ferried to the festivities, which were at Proctor Maple Research Center in Underhill. (And once they got there, partygoers might have ridden on the back of a bulldozer...like in this one photographed instance. Because why not?)

A few updates have been made to the Vermont Sugar on Snow tradition over time. The party is now on campus, and it no longer involves everyone lining up at long wooden troughs full of snow. But the good times persist!

UVM undergraduate students Jake Grenon, Maddy Orlowski, Colby Filosa, and Alanna Sherman are leaving with their names credited as co-authors in the respected journal, Experimental Physiology.

The 4 seniors recently published a study on the findings of how the combination of a Western diet and binge drinking impacts genders differently. In the RAMP lab, led by principal investigator Dr. Chris Skinner (assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences) and mentee PhD candidate Ihsan Shawki Akili, students designed experiments, collected data, analyzed results, and prepared figures for the mouse model study.

“Getting involved in research is the best way for a student to immerse themselves in the learning process, and UVM is great at providing structured avenues for students to get involved. They get to take what they learn in their classwork and apply it to help solve real-world problems,” comments Skinner.

Undergrad authorship on peer-reviewed biomedical research is rare, making this just another example of how students here in CALS!
