Hello! Welcome to the UVM Agriculture, Landscape, and Environment Department (formerly Plant and Soil Science) page.

We hope to establish a network for students,staff, faculty, alumni or anyone who is interested in life sciences. Our studies include:
Agroecology, Sustainable Landscape Horticulture and Design, Soil Science, Pedology, Sustainability, Food Systems, Urban Agriculture, Entomology, Integrated Pest Management, Permaculture, Landscape Design, Stormwater, Gray Water Management, Undergraduate and Graduate level studies both M.S. and Ph.D.

What better way to kick off our review of the works in this year’s ASBA International than this exquisite scene by Abbye Carston? Take a moment to give it your full attention. At the aerial view, our eyes take in the elements at an easy pace, guided by the composition—constrained by the droop of river birch branch on the right and the firm boundary of the wild geranium on the left. Scattered within are the lively inhabitants of a village—bees and caterpillars and moths. If we come closer, we find that they are brilliant with detail. It is that detail that makes this work so much fun to study. Carston created it to tell the story of her daily walks in nature. The 29th Annual International will be on view at the Society of Illustrators in New York, NY from September 10, 2026 to January 9, 2027. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 10, from 5–9 pm, with an artist walkthrough beginning at 4 pm. All are welcome.
