The Underground Railroad Museum of Burlington County held a special event Saturday to pay tribute to the women heroes of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion – the only all-Black, all-female battalion to serve overseas during World War II.

The museum’s Celebrate 6888th Day program at Historic Smithville Park focused on the courage and resiliency of the more than 800 women who served during the unit.

Nicknamed the “Six Triple Eight”, the battalion was tasked with clearing a massive backlog of mail intended for U.S. troops stationed in Europe. In the face of racism, sexism, and the chaos of war, these soldiers worked around the clock in warehouses stacked to the ceiling with undelivered letters and packages. They processed over 17 million pieces of mail in just six months, restoring morale and reconnecting soldiers with their loved ones.
The celebration was the first event commemorating these trailblazing women to be held in Burlington County.

Soror Dr. Karen Jordan, a 6888 descendant and legacy daughter of Soror Annie B. Knight Jordan, is an ambassador and historian that was among the featured speakers.

👖 Wear Denim for Awareness! 👖
On April 29, the Epsilon Seta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. are wearing denim to raise awareness for survivors of sexual assault.
Denim Day is a powerful reminder that there are NO excuses and NO outfits that invite assault.
🎵 Why “Lean on Me”?
“Lean on Me” reminds survivors that they are not alone. Someone will carry them when they can’t carry themselves. For a sisterhood built on lifting others up, there’s no more fitting message. 💛💙🐩
