During National Volunteer Month in April, Vermont 4-H wants its nearly 1,000 volunteers to know how much their time, commitment and service, which they provide to youth and families across the state, is appreciated.

"Our volunteers give so much," University of Vermont Extension 4-H Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator Amanda Royce recently told Across the Fence. "They really are the heart of our program, and they're running clubs and they're doing so many things."

So this year, Vermont 4-H organized a set of statewide awards. Swipe through to see the seven winners, and click the link in our bio to learn more.

CALS is proud to announce a 2026 recipient of the Goldwater Scholarship, Madison Guyette!

Madison is a junior majoring in Molecular Genetics and is the only UVM student to receive the prestigious national science prize this year! Madison is from Swanton, Vermont, and has been passionate about science and research since she was young.

In the Chatterjee Lab, where she currently works, she conducts research on how cancer cells survive DNA damage and how blocking a key pathway (REV1) could make cancer treatments more effective. She is proud to receive the award and, after graduation, she is interested in pursuing a PhD to continue her research on cancer and DNA repair.

Have you heard of our Extension Master Gardener Program here at UVM?

Here are four of our “Hall of Famers” who have amassed more than 1,000 volunteer hours! The Master Gardener Program is a 16-week program held during the spring semester. Students in this course will learn science-based gardening information and techniques, covering topics such as botany basics, soil science, insects and diseases, vegetable and fruit gardening, and native and pollinator plants.
These four master gardeners have applied the knowledge they gained from this amazing course to positively impact their communities.
