Montana Tech student gains hands-on experience through Huntsman Cancer Institute internship!⚒️

Gwendolyn Gilliam didn’t expect to land an internship with one of the nation’s leading cancer research institutions.

“I took a chance and applied, knowing it would be an incredible opportunity to grow,” she said.

That simple decision led the Montana Technological University biology student to a hands-on experience with Huntsman Cancer Institute that allowed her to serve communities across Montana while building skills for her future in healthcare.🧬

“I’m able to apply and connect the things I’m learning in the classroom to my work in healthcare,” Gilliam said.

Her advice for students considering a future in healthcare is to jump in. She moved to Butte without any local connections. By engaging with her peers, she built a network that eventually led to her orthodontic assistant role.

“Growth comes from doing things that make you uncomfortable,” she said.

Wangerin balances athletics, academics on path to occupational therapy!⚒️

Over the past four years, Liv Wangerin has defined what it means to be a standout student-athlete at Montana Tech. Her leadership on the court helped propel the Orediggers to a historic Frontier Conference title–the program’s first since 1983—cementing her legacy in Montana Tech sports history.🏀

Beyond the court, Wangerin dedicated over 100 hours shadowing local occupational therapists and maintaining a stellar academic record, landing her on the Chancellor’s List, Dean’s List, and Honor Roll for the University as well as Academic All-District. Wangerin prepares to head to the University of Montana’s Doctorate of Occupational Therapy program!

“I just love Butte and Montana Tech,” she said. “The community is so tight knit, and I’ve met so many great people along the way.”

From Baja to blacksmithing: Francis Rogers builds his future at Montana Tech!⚒️

Most mechanical engineering students graduate having built a few projects. Francis Rogers is leaving Montana Technological University having built multiple off-road race buggies, managed a fabrication shop, and crafted multiple medieval-style pieces of armor.🎓

Originally from Powell, Wyoming, Rogers came to Montana Tech following a family path. His brother earned an electrical engineering degree from the university, and his father completed a master’s in geochemistry. For Rogers, though, the decision to study mechanical engineering came down to opportunity.

“There’s just a really varied career path,” Rogers said. “I can do whatever I want with a mechanical engineering degree.”

Looking back, Rogers says Montana Tech delivered an experience that went beyond what he expected.

“I think I got the long end of the stick as far as college goes,” he said. “I’ve talked to a lot of friends at larger universities, and they didn’t have the same experience I did, with hundreds of people in their classes. At Montana Tech, you actually get to know your professors, and you get to do a lot more hands-on work.”📚

Did you get a chance to check out our Line Rodeo last week?⚒️

It's one of our favorite traditions held at the Highlands College pole yard where graduating Line Program students compete in a series of line-related events in front of their friends and family!

It's a way to show off everything they learned during their time here through a little friendly competition.
