Our campus is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to train the next generation of industry leaders. The Academy's rigorous academics and hands-o

n approach to building leadership and professional skills, fully prepare our students for successful careers. The proof: nearly 100 percent of Massachusetts Maritime Academy graduates are employed in well paying, career track positions within 90-days of graduation. The Regiment of Cadets and military-style uniforms play an important role in campus life at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. It reinforces that the status at the Academy is not an entitlement based on gender, race, or socio-economic class; it is earned through hard work, honor, and integrity. Though the Academy is structured as a military academy, designed to grow effective leaders, only cadets who volunteer for commissioning programs have military obligations during and after their time at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Through Sea Terms and Cooperative Education Programs, our undergraduates log 6 months of invaluable career experience during their 4-year pursuit of a Bachelor's Degree, often while traveling to a dozen or more countries. Upon graduation, our cadets are distinctly qualified to lead as licensed maritime professionals, skilled business managers, ship safety officers, commissioned military officers and more. Extracurricular activities are viewed as a way to cultivate pride in the Academy tradition as well as maintain the Academy's Tradition of Pride. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the wide variety of activities and athletics offered at MMA. An impressive 40% of cadets are athletes on one or more of our competitive NCAA and ECAC Division III college teams.

This year, our Emergency Management department partnered with Team Rubicon to bring real-world disaster response training directly to our freshman class.

In this session, students are taking part in Team Rubicon’s Core Operations course, Debris Management & Muck-Outs, building the hands-on skills needed to step in when communities need it most. From clearing debris to stabilizing homes after disasters, they’re learning how to turn knowledge into action and make an immediate impact in the field.

It’s all part of preparing the next generation of leaders to respond, recover, and rebuild when it matters most.

Proud moment at the Big Blue Conference in Falmouth 🌊

Daniel Kowalski and William Eltringham (Marine Science, Safety & Environmental Protection majors) presented their hands-on research on eelgrass and water quality in Buzzards Bay; work they’ve been conducting all year in Professor Kevin Hefferan’s Environmental Monitoring capstone.

From weekly fieldwork aboard a research vessel to analyzing eelgrass coverage, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient levels, their findings are helping “ground truth” state data and revealing real changes in the Bay’s ecosystem, including declining eelgrass and the spread of invasive species.

In collaboration with NOAA and the eMOLT program, this research is contributing to a deeper understanding of coastal health and advancing the Blue Economy at Mass Maritime.

Energy Systems Engineering majors Knox Ackerman, Dhillan Maxwell-Coimbra, and Michael Voci took 1st place in the Uncrewed Electric Open Watercraft category at the 2026 PEP Workforce Development Competition, outperforming 15 teams nationwide.

Their vessel, Patriot State III, was designed, built, and tested entirely by the team as part of their ESE Capstone, featuring a custom hull, propulsion, steering, and remote-control system. They also earned Best Whitepaper and the fastest 2-mile race time (97/100 points).

An incredible debut for Mass Maritime in this national competition and a powerful example of what Energy Systems Engineering cadets can do.
