HOOYAH NAVY🦅🏈⚓️ —————— Last night Battalion 73 secured a win in the Army vs. Navy Flag Football Game; a long standing tradition for Mass Maritime’s ROTC programs. Navy won 14-22 in a hard fought match right up until the end. Shoutout to Midshipman 1/C Jethro Joseph for an outstanding coaching performance and to the team that closed the deal. Thank you Army for an exceptional game and for serving along side us!!! Well done for all who participated.

Yesterday afternoon during our Leadership Lab, Battalion 73 had the privilege of hosting the Commanding Officer of the USS Massachusetts, CDR Siedsma, and members of his crew. CDR Siedsma talked about his many years of undersea warfare experience and the greatest challenges for the submarine fleet. Since WWII, the Submarine fleet has played a large part in our deterrence capabilities and presence in oceans across the globe. Without the Submarine fleet, the Navy would not have the influence that it does today. Thank you to the crew of the USS Massachusetts for all that you do and for coming to speak with us!

This past Sunday, midshipmen of the program took a trip down to Groton, CT with Submarine Officer LT Wood (OIC for Battalion 73) for a tour around the Submarine Force Museum. They got the chance to see Electric Boat and tour a Virginia Class and Los Angeles Class Submarine. They got to participate in an Escape Simulator trainer as well as various other trainers while on the tour. SSMP also had the amazing opportunity of connecting with other ROTC units across New England. A huge thank you to Naval Submarine Base New London and Electric Boat for having us!

New Student Orientation Day (NSOD)! ——— Before midshipmen go on to lead in the fleet, they must learn follower-ship. For three weeks new students joining the Strategic Sealift Midshipmen Program have been working hard; attending morning PT and studying their Navy knowledge all for one day, NSOD. This past Sunday, new Midshipmen Candidates were given the opportunity to show their strength and knowledge in a day packed with physical training and awareness. The candidates performed well and pushed themselves AND each other. Congratulations to all who completed the day. Up next, PQS Boards!!

Battalion 73 trains for damage control situations standing in waste high cold sea water for hours. This is the damage control wet trainer called the USS Buttercup at Naval Station Newport. Midshipmen always have fun with the simulation, having a real opportunity to work as a team to save the ship. They learned about shoring hatches and bulkheads and dropping an eductor pump into a water filled hold. Thank you to all the Buttercup staff that taught us with their knowledge from the fleet.

Want to learn how to fly Navy helicopters? This weekend five midshipmen took a trip to Hanscom Air Force Base to meet with Commanding Officer CMDR Matthew “G.B.” Mravlja and Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 26. HSC 26 trains pilots and aircrewmen to employ the MH-60S worldwide in a variety of missions, including fleet logistics support, search and rescue, medical evacuation, special warfare support, anti-surface warfare and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief. The crew gave the midshipmen a first hand look into the MH-60S and answered any and all questions about Naval Aviation. Midshipmen can purse a path in Naval Aviation through the Strategic Sealift Program by submitting an application pack by their Fall semester Senior year. Thank you to Commanding Officer CMDR Matthew “G.B.” Mravlja and the rest of HSC 26 for having Battalion 73 this weekend!

In the past week Battalion 73 has had the pleasure of listening to some great leaders. RADM Michael Wettlaufer (first and last pictures) is the current commander of Military Sealift Commander. He was the previous Commander of Carrier Strike Group 3. He reiterated the importance of what we are training to do as mariners and how the Strategic Sealift Officer Force can aid to the missions of MSC and the US Navy. At our leadership lab we heard from CAPT Chris Brown (second picture) who is a Submarine Officer with over 25 years of Naval experience. He enlightened us with amazing options the Navy has for leadership, free school, and a wide future with nuclear science and technology.
We love hearing from gentleman like this because everyone always learns something and it encourages us to be grateful for our Navy.

Officer in Charge LT Matthew Campbell just attended his last Military/Leadership Lab with the battalion, as he is moving on to attend medical school. He gave a wonderful farewell address showing us what true humility looks like through his experiences with and without the US Navy. He has seen the current senior class grow from freshman cadets into future naval officers. We are so grateful for his leadership and knowledge he has given to our community. We wish him fair winds and following seas. He will make a great doctor!

“Wear it with pride gents!”

After completing the Personal Qualifying Standard board, these eight midshipman will now wear the Strategic Sealift Midshipman Program breast insignia. This pin represents leadership on and off campus. A lot of great officers have worn it in the past and will continue in the future. It shows excellence and commitment to everyone in the regiment. Congratulations on your hard work! Well deserved.
