Over 500 people attended CI’s third Arbor Day / Earth Day Festival, which was held on April 22nd at the Margaret Tiplady Burgess Courtyard.

CI won the “Tree Campus USA” designation for the second consecutive year. Ysabel Trinidad, VP for Business & Financial Affairs, accepted a plaque on the behalf of the University. The Arbor Day / Earth Day Festival consisted of entertainment (music, cotton candy, & t-shirt giveaways), “green” education opportunities from various school clubs and local organizations, and demonstrations of “green” practices. Other events included in the celebration were the release of approximately 60,000 lady bugs (which act as natural pesticides) into surrounding rose gardens and the planting of an honorary tree next to the Student Union Building.

The Arbor Day / Earth Day Festival was part of the larger “Earth Week Extravaganza”, that included several events focused on sustainability and conservation that took place throughout the week. This year’s Earth Week Extravaganza was successful in uniting students, faculty, staff, and the local community in an effort to increase awareness of our combined impact on the environment while providing information and opportunities to become more “eco-friendly”.

There were 5 involving problems to solve in a 3-hour contest covering many aspects of the trade taught in the core CS courses. Just the participation in the contest is an act of courage, so all the following participants should be highly commended:

Jonathan Tomaske, Brandon Arthur, Taylor Tally, Luke LaFontaine, Jeffrey Marzec, James Allen, Glo Mercado, Nicholas Dolan-Stern, Anthony Brice, Joel Helling, Taylor Dinkins, Tyler Bettencourt, and Winter Smith.

Thanks to the Computer Science Club for providing the awards.

Again, congratulations to the winners and to all participants!

For a second consecutive year, CSU Channel Islands (CI) has earned recognition as a “Tree Campus USA” from the Arbor Day Foundation. Approximately 200 campuses across the country have achieved the distinction, which salutes colleges and universities for their environmental stewardship, healthy management of campus forests, and engagement of staff and students in conservation goals.

CI achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and student service-learning projects.

“This recognition reflects the commitment of CI’s entire campus community, which cares about making our environment stunning and sustainable,” said Dave Chakraborty, Associate Vice President for Operations, Planning & Construction. “Not only do our outdoor spaces make CI a desirable place to live, learn, work and play, but they also provide a valuable opportunity for learning about conserving and replenishing the resources we use.”

Sustainability is one of the University’s strategic goals. The 1,200-acre campus has been carefully planned to preserve natural open space and native vegetation. CI’s 135-acre main campus is home to more than 2,025 trees of 110 varieties, ranging in age from newly planted to historic. The extended campus includes a 370-acre regional park and several acres of restored creek bed. Over the past year, more than 700 new trees have been planted. An ongoing fundraising campaign called “Leave Your Mark” invites donors to adopt a tree, paver or bench, commemorated with a personalized plaque, to help aid in the effort. In addition, students in CI classes and the Green Generation Club frequently engage in planting, restoration, weeding, composting, water audits and other conservation efforts on campus.

The University will receive formal recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation on April 22, as CI celebrates its third annual Earth Extravaganza, a campus and community celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day. The event being held from 1 to 4 p.m. at CI’s Central Mall will feature a combination of “green” festivities, speakers, music, demonstrations, information booths, vendors, and service opportunities.

Other planned events include:

“Tapped” Film Showings
Monday – Thursday, April 21 – 24 at 12 p.m. at Ojai Hall Lobby

Is access to clean drinking water a basic human right or a commodity that should be bought and sold like any other article of commerce? This timely documentary is a behind-the-scenes look into the unregulated and unseen world of an industry that aims to privatize and sell back the one resource that ought never to become commodity: our water.

Pollinator Conservation
Thursday, April 24 from 1 – 4 p.m. at Long Grade Creek
Join Facilities Services and the Green Generation Club in assisting the conservation of pollinators such as the Monarch Butterfly by planting flowers near Long Grade Creek on campus.

E-Waste Day
Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the A3 Parking Lot

CI’s Center for Community Engagement is providing free e-waste recycling services to CI and the local community. Anything that plugs into an electric socket will be accepted (i.e. blow dryers, toasters, computers, etc.) It’s quick and easy – just drive by and drop off your e-waste.

TheCSU Channel IslandsChoir is pleased to announce the Choral Spectacular, a rare concert combining the talents of the Channel Islands Choir, Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra and the First United Methodist Church Chancel Choir in a moving performance of Brahms’ Requiem.

The groups will perform two separate concerts. The first will be held on Saturday, March 22, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Studio Channel Islands Art Center at 2222 Ventura Blvd. in downtown Camarillo. The second, on Sunday, March 23, at 4 p.m., will take place at the First United Methodist Church at 1338 E. Santa Clara Street in Ventura. Performances are free, but a donation supporting the Channel Island Choral Association (CICA) and its music education programs in Ventura County is requested.

Brahms’ Requiem is a sweeping, emotional work, popular with singers and audiences alike. The Channel Islands Choir chose to perform Brahms’ Requiem for this year's Choral Spectacular program as an anniversary tribute to the victims of last year's Boston Marathon tragedy on April 15, as well as in remembrance of a beloved former choir member, the late Rev. William Gutkneckt.

A highlight will be the dual performances of soloists Juan Dunn and Rabihah Davis Dunn – a husband and wife team from the Bay Area. Both have long-established careers as professional baroque, opera and oratorio singers; however, they have never performed together before in public.

Baritone Juan Dunn has sung for more than two decades, including over 50 performances with the Washington National Opera in Washington, D.C. Soprano Rabihah Davis Dunn has received many awards and honors during her 17-year career, including winning the Grand Prize from the Bel Canto Foundation. She will have her San Francisco debut shortly in Bizet's Pearl Fishers, but has made time in her performance schedule to appear at the Choral Spectacular.

“Brahms finished his Requiem in 1869 after the death of his mother; however, the piece was intended to be a message of hope rather than loss. He wrote it as a comfort to the living who are left behind,” said Choral and Orchestral Director Dr. KuanFen Liu. “His Requiem took Germany by storm when it was first performed, and its comforting message for those dealing with loss still speaks to people of all cultures and faiths 145 years later.”

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the CSU Channel Islands Choir is a diverse singing group open to members of the campus and community. Led by Dr. KuanFen Liu, the choir meets weekly as a class in the University’s Performing Arts Program. It offers participants exposure to a wide range of musical genres and periods, as well as the opportunity to perform publicly on campus and throughout Ventura County. To learnmore, visit the choir’s website at http://choir.csuci.edu or contact Dr. Liu at 805-278-0375 or [email protected].

Channel Islands Choral Association (CICA) is the choir’s sponsor. CICA is a 501(c)(3) organization that serves Ventura County, bringing music education and performance to the local schools and community. For more information, visit the CICA website at www.cicachoir.org or contact Nina Ruhland at 805-914-4589 or [email protected].
