The History Department invites you to join us for a roundtable discussion titled, “Indolent State: Realities of the Colombian National Strike from the Media and the Street” on Friday, May 14 from 6:00-7:30pm.

The goal of our discussion is to inform our campus and local community about what is happening in Colombia in the context of the National Strike which started on April 28, 2021. Invited panelists will share their experiences from three perspectives discussing the state’s response to protesters, media coverage of the strike, and the role of student collectives in organizing for the strike and supporting protesters. This space centers voices from a lawyer, a journalist, and two student activists in Colombia, who will reflect on their experiences during the strike. Please note that our discussion will be in Spanish with language interpretation provided in English.

We hope that you can join us and look forward to “seeing” you there.

Outreach360 is an international nonprofit organization that inspires and empowers people to reach their full potential and give back (to their communities) by expanding educational, leadership, and service opportunities. We work with underserved communities in Latin America to provide opportunities for personal, academic, and professional advancement. One of the many opportunities Outreach360 provides is free English classes to underserved people in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.

This Fall we have opportunities for college students to participate in our virtual service-learning internship program. For two hours each Saturday from September 12 - November 28, our college interns will have one hour of structured English immersion conversations and one hour of structured Spanish immersion conversations.

It's an immersive language and cultural exchange between teachers and people and a valuable service-learning experience. This is a great opportunity for students to practice their Spanish with native speakers in a fun and interactive way. During the Spanish conversations, our Dominican and Nicaraguan students will share about their hometown, local food, culture, geography, sports and games, slang words, holidays, and art and dance.

Outreach360 has been serving in Latin America since 1994. Nearly 25,000 volunteers have joined over the years.

For more information, you can visit Virtual Impact Program on on the Outreach360 website: https://www.outreach360.org/fallinternship

This Fall, Outreach360 is offering a unique two-way language learning internship. With just a two-hour commitment each Saturday for twelve weeks, you will provide our students with the valuable opportunity of speaking with a native English speaker through small group conversations.
