As a member of the Artificial Intelligence Advisory Group of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and an advisor on the Canadian Medical Association’s AI policy, Sian Tsuei, PhD ’23, helps establish national guidelines for the use of AI in primary care, family practice, and other clinical settings.

In his new book, Medical AI: Promises and Perils at a Critical Moment, Tsuei explores the technology’s potential to transform healthcare—and disrupt it. He sat down recently with Harvard Griffin GSAS Communications to discuss his research and why he worries that the power and potential of AI will overwhelm the guiding principle of medicine: first, do no harm.

"As I begin my PhD work at Harvard Griffin GSAS and Harvard Chan, I am eager to pursue new research questions in food technology and nutrition. Because cultured meat evaluation is an emerging field, designing epidemiological and nutritional assessments presents unique challenges. I hope to leverage resources across Harvard and collaborate with specialized laboratories in the Boston area, including Tufts University, to conduct innovative research in this field. My overarching goal is to improve population nutrition globally, whether in Japan, Costa Rica, or the US."

Roka Kakehi is an incoming PhD student in population health sciences. A native of Tokyo, Kakehi’s interest in food and public health has led her from Japan to Costa Rica, the University of Pennsylvania, and finally Harvard Griffin GSAS.
