Our second featured associate role spotlights our US Department of Defense policy projects! Accepted applicants will have the opportunity to work with USCYBERCOM and USAFRICOM at the Department of Defense. Researchers will work as a team to document Russian ransomware and examine its impact on US cybersecurity, or climate change in Africa. In addition to honing writing and research skills, project members will receive mentorship from agency officials and possible travel opportunities as noted in our role descriptions doc (tinyurl.com/hufpiassociate). What does a HUFPI associate do, might you ask? Kicking off our featured associate role series are our US Department of State policy projects! Interested applicants, if accepted, will have the opportunity to work with the Bureau of Intelligence and Research and the Bureau of Legislative Affairs at the State Dept. Researchers will work as a team to analyze Chinese influence in Latin America or US arms sales in the Middle East. The Harvard Undergraduate International Relations Scholars Program is a conference run for high school students looking to pursue a career in foreign policy. Notable guest speakers included Karen Dynan, former chief economist and assistant US Treasury secretary for economic policy, Dean Garfield, VP of Public Policy for Netflix, Jason Furman, former chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, Jody Olsen, former director of the Peace Corps, and Maria Fernanda Espinosa, former president of the UN General Assembly.

We extend an enormous thank you to all the foreign policy experts who generously shared their time, insight, and expertise in a diverse range of topics with attendees. We are also extremely grateful for the energy, passion, and engagement of the many students who joined us for this year’s conference. Our best wishes to those who will go on to shape the world of foreign affairs in the future, and we’re gearing up for another fantastic Harvard IR Scholars Program in spring 2023!

Starbucks. Dreamport. Car rides with Chief Matt McKenzie (Intelligence Partner Engagements). Conversations with General Paul Nakasone (Commander, USCYBERCOM and Director, NSA). An experience that transcended (cyber)space and time.

The culmination of a semester-long project on Chinese disinformation and election influence and interference, the USCYBERCOM x HUFPI team and President Sama Kubba set their routers to Washington D.C. to present their findings to the U.S. Cyber Command in Fort Meade, Maryland.

The Harvard IR Scholars’ Programme was honored to welcome María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés — Former President of the United Nations General Assembly and Former Minister of National Defense of Ecuador — today!

Maria Fernanda Espinosa is an Ecuadorian academic, diplomat, politician, poet, and linguist with over 30 years of experience in academia, NGOs, international organizations, and high-level government positions. As President of the United Nations General Assembly, she became the fourth woman in history and the first from Latin America and the Caribbean to preside over this global forum. In Ecuador, she served twice as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Defense, and Minister of Culture and Heritage. Currently, Ms. Espinosa has several advisory roles, including Liaison to the UN for the Group of Women Leaders voices for Change and Inclusion, Commissioner and co-chair of The Lancet Commission on COVID-19, co-chair of the Coalition for the UN We Need, Member of the Science Panel for the Amazon, Member of the Taskforce on Nature Markets and Fellow at the Robert Bosch Academy.
