On August 7, 2025, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights recognized the โ€œright to careโ€ as a standalone human right, marking a bold shift in how states must support access to care, especially for persons with disabilities and marginalized communities.

What does this mean in practice? How might it shape laws and advocacy across the Americas, from community-built care models in Colombia to the challenges posed by austerity in Argentina and service cuts in the U.S.?

Join us on February 10 for a webinar hosted by HPOD, Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics, and David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard. Panelists will explore how this decision could reshape care systems and legal strategies in deeply different national contexts.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, people with disabilities are too often left out of the conversation. And it shows: in forced sterilizations, denial of consent, and widespread barriers to autonomy.

Our new piece is urgent, eye-opening, and a necessary read about justice and equity.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Join us on November 18th at 12:20 PM for our new event, Older Personsโ€™ Human Rights: Forging a Path Towards New International Legal Protections, hosted in collaboration with the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics, and MGH Center for Law, Brain & Behavior.

On April 3, 2025, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution launching formal negotiations for an international treaty on the rights of older persons โ€” a landmark step in protecting a population often overlooked. This event will unpack how treaty participants can build on innovations from the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and avoid early pitfalls, especially at the intersection of ageing, health, and human rights.
