Our Spring 2024 Newsletter is live! We are pleased to share with you these stories about expanding opportunities for creating and making at MIT.

Jane Halpern teaches her Learn to Quilt IAP Course in Metropolis Makerspace. Read about that story and more in our new Spring 2024 Newsletter.

A custom 3D printed Catan by Richard Beattie (3rd Year, EECS) and Alayah Hines (3rd Year, MechE). All the parts were designed in Fusion360 and printed on a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon with AMS. Instead of each player being a separate color, they gave each a theme. Richard and Alayah did some prototyping in Metropolis, but most of the printing was done in SHED: Safety Health Environmental Discovery Lab (MIT EHS’s new makerspace) where they have a multi-filament 3D printer.

Dear Friend of MIT Project Manus,

Happy Pi Day!

Project Manus’ mission includes building student maker communities and empowering our students to make a positive impact on the world. Take a look at these images of students and their projects during IAP 2024! These students were the recipients of grants supporting their work.

You have a chance to eliminate ‘ability to pay’ as an obstacle to the next student with a passion project, by giving to the Project Manus Fund (https://mit24hourchallenge.mightycause.com/donate/Climate-Sustainability) as part of the Climate & Sustainability Groups MIT 24-Hour Challenge. With your help, we can make a difference in MIT students’ lives so they can make a difference in the world.

Thank you,

Professor J. Kim Vandiver
Director, MIT Project Manus

Our MIT community is greater than the sum of its parts—and when we work together, we can make something truly special: a brighter future. We know you love MIT as much as we do, so we wanted to let you know that the eighth MIT 24-Hour Challenge is happening RIGHT NOW! Together, we have the chance to make a difference, to make progress, and to make the future. MIT is counting on us―its alumni, students, parents, and friends―for our support for these important efforts. Gloria Zhu, a second year undergrad studying Course 2 (Mechanical Engineering) made the most of IAP '24 by receiving an IAP Mini Grant to develop and engineer a robotic paintbrush, learning to quilt in Jane Halpern’s course and working on an MIT design installation with Nervous System, a generative design studio that hosted the MAD workshop “Building Complex Curvature From Flat Sheets.” It was one of the more impressive and jam-packed make-a-thons we witnessed this IAP!

From our friends at MIT Morningside Academy for Design:

"Design + Computation: Interview with Nervous System Design Studio Co-Founders"

MIT alumna Jessica Rosenkrantz '05 and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg, offered a week-long workshop at MIT exploring design and computation. “Building Complex Curvature from Flat Sheets” involved 15 MIT students in making a large aluminum sculpture now displayed in the N52 Building courtyard.

Watch the interview with Nervous System's co-founders.

Nervous System is a generative design studio that works at the intersection of science, art, and technology. “Founded in 2007, it has pioneered the applicati...
