EMR invites applications to join our Dissertation Working Group for the upcoming school year! APPLY BY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18TH!

The Dissertation Working Group of the Committee on Ethnicity, Migration, Rights (EMR), supports post-exams doctoral students doing research on topics related to ethnic studies, race, Indigeneity, borders, and migration. Doctoral students from all Harvard schools and departments are welcome to apply.

This is EMR’s ninth year hosting this group, which provides interdisciplinary exchange, non-judgmental support, and accountability toward each member’s personal writing goals. Sessions include time for checking in and building community, and revolve around discussing pre-circulated drafts of works in progress.

The group will meet Fridays from 12-2pm ET approximately biweekly across the semester. Depending on the availability & preference of applicants, we will either have sessions on Zoom on in-person. A year-long commitment is preferred, but applicants that can only do a single semester may be accepted on a case by case basis.

The working group this year will be convened by Dr. J. Rubén Díaz Vásquez, Lecturer in Latinx Studies at EMR. For questions, please contact him at [email protected].

Meet EMR Faculty: ✨ Dr. Leslie J. Fernandez, Lecturer in Asian American Studies & EMR Program Director ✨

Leslie is a scholar of Asian & Asian American Studies, critical race and ethnic studies, postcolonialism & anti-colonialism, science & technology studies, and science fiction. Their book project, titled “Asiandroid: Techno-Orientalism and the AI Imaginary,” examines the relationship between race and technology by analyzing representations of robots, androids, and artificial intelligence in comparison with Orientalist and techno-Orientalist discourse. My work can be found in Textual Practice and Extrapolation.
